BOSTON, Mass. (CBS Local) With many states dealing with record-high temperatures and massive heat waves, many people are probably sick of summer already.
A new study says that your brain may hate the heat more than you do.
Researchers at Harvard University have discovered that a persons brain works 13 percent slower when it has to operate in extreme heat. According to their report in PLOS Medicine, scientists studied 44 college students living in Boston during a 2016 heat wave.
That July heat wave was reportedly one of the hottest in the citys history. 22 of the students lived in a brick-based buildings with no air-conditioning. The other 22 undergrads were living in air-conditioned dorms during the 12-day experiment.

I began to research the oxygen levels based on heat, humidity etc., wondering if that might explain less oxygen getting to our brains, lungs and heart.
Will report my findings!!!!!
Hot here, but Uhm...what was it?

The body demands more oxygen as it works to stay cool, which can lead to decreased lung function. This can result in abnormally rapid or deep breathing, a condition called hyperpnea.
Maybe they get dumber because when it gets really hot, they drink lots of beer.
Hot flashes?

Decrease of oxygen supply to the brain even though there is adequate blood flow caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, pollution in our cities, choking or suffocation can create conditions like tiredness, depression, irritability, poor judgment and health problems.
Increasing the oxygen supply to the brain and nervous system will reverse these conditions.
LOL
Not something caused by the failure of an air conditioner.
They don’t call it FloriDUH for nothing!
Makes sense. Your brain is basically a CPU and radiates heat when used. If it is already warm outside, your brain has to reduce processor throughput or risk overheating.
Cool-thinking Yankees also won the War of the Rebellion. The Northernmost General of the CSA was Lee. He could see the White Hose from his porch.
Captain Obvious says folks don’t do well in the brain department when they’re freezing to death either ...
Speak for yourself.
After the winter and non-spring we had, I am enjoying every minute of this and spending as much time outdoors as possible.
I work in a fairly hazardous industry in the deep south. Our safety stats could have saved these people a lot of time. They may not necessarily get dumber, but they get tired and distracted. Our chart showed the same thing every year; flat line from Jan to May, then increase every month from May to August, then a gradual decline for the rest of the year.
“That explains so much about Guam!”
Just wondering. How hot was it on the day Hank Johnson was worried about that island capsizing from too many people on one side?
True. The shootings in Chicago go up during the summer as opposed to the winter when people stay inside.
It’s 95 and I just this minute turned on the A/C. Yeah, yeah, don’t tell me about the energy used to cool it down. We have furbabies that come and go constantly and one is old so would pee on the carpet even more if the door was closed.
Not just heat, but also women tend to lower the IQ of men.
Tequila makes women's cloths fall off.
What company was it that sold a pith helmet with solar-powered fan cooling?
