A little girl torn apart by savage dogs lay on her hospital bed as nurses pumped her full of painkillers and pleaded, "Mummy, please don't let them put me down,".
Five-year-old Leah Preston heard the vicious animals who mauled her in Low Hill, Wolverhampton, had been destroyed and was worried she might be put to sleep, her family said.
Doctors said the youngster was in a stable condition in Birmingham Children's Hospital after undergoing surgery for bite wounds to her leg, groin and arm on Friday.
Onlookers watched in horror on Thursday afternoon as schoolgirl Leah was tossed around like a rag doll being viciously savaged by the two animals.
She was playing in her front garden in Hawksford Crescent when the two dogs, named Gina and Kaiser, escaped from a metal cage behind the next door house and attacked her.
The Bull Mastiff cross-breeds tugged her between each other, tearing chunks out of her flesh before turning on their owner and her two young children, witnesses said.
The owner of two dogs, Jean Harvey, today broke down in tears, shaking and unable to speak, as she tried to relive the horrific incident.
With bloodied teeth marks covering her arms, Ms Harvey wept as she vividly recalled the two dogs attacking her, her two children, Liam, five, and Lauren, three.
Friends said she had used her body as a shield to protect her five-year-old neighbour, who was being torn apart by the two fighting dogs. (excerpt) (continued at site)

Unless you want to do something like douse them with ammonia.
What the profile of the bitees is, we do not know. A malamute might be fine with a baby, a terror with a burglar, and we’d never know it from this list.

Pit Bulls - The Dogs of Peace
Pit bulls are worst on strangers, huh.
Since bear-baiting’s a European “sport”- mostly of people with wealth who could afford to lose livestock- the mastiffs originated in Europe, not in Africa .I would think then that mastiffs and pits would be found in former colonies like S Africa, but not elsewhere. In Muslim areas dogs are kept for protection by some but are generally considered unclean, so those places should have few records of pit attacks if any.
Other parts of the world seem satisfied with cockfighting and cockfighting is a more affordable “sport” popular among the poor since a farm only needs one rooster and extra roosters are useless, injurious to themselves and to the hens. The loser gets eaten, so there’s no waste.
Weren’t pit bulls also used against rebellious slaves as well?
For those interested, Dogsbite.org has plenty of documentation and extensive victim reports detailing unprovoked attacks by pits, attempts to conceal the breed, apologists lame excuses, legal efforts to hold owners responsible, the staggering financial costs that fall on the victim, etc. etc. A competing website offers pro-pit propaganda and has intentionally chosen a name VERY similar so if you want to check accurate stats, make sure you use the precise spelling above.
Lots of statistics - I grabbed a few in my prior post from this page. Pit bulls do not have a “bad rap”, they earned their reputation for unprovoked, devastating attacks on family, friends and strangers, one bloody scrap of ripped scalp and sinew at a time.

57 dog attack deaths & 645 disfigurements in 2017, led by pit bulls
January 8, 2018 by Merritt Clifton
Setters, Newfies, Dalmatians & greyhounds continue 35-year record as the safest big dogs
Preliminary final 2017 dog attack data from the U.S. and Canada suggests some good news, in that only 989 dogs participated in killing or disfiguring humans, down from the 2016 record 1,075.
But the bad news is that those 989 dogs killed 57 people, 11 more than the previous record of 46 who were killed in 2015.
Pit bulls killed 40 people in 2017, 39 in the U.S. and one in Canada, a total of 12 more people than were killed by pit bulls in 2016 and five more than the previous record of 34 killed in 2015.
Pit bulls accounted for only 88% of disfigurements
The 989 dogs who killed or disfigured people in 2017 accounted for 645 total disfigurements, 14 more than the previous record of 631 who were disfigured in 2016.
Of the disfigurements, 570four fewer than in 2016were disfigured by pit bulls, meaning that pit bulls accounted for only 88% of the dog attack disfigurements reported in 2017, down from 91% in 2016. But the 2017 disfigurement toll may well rise in the coming weeks.

Those are medium dogs really... not big dogs.
Please see post #7 for a link to more information on South Africa dog attack fatalities. Thank you.
I suspect that in the majority of these cases the owners weren't any better at raising their kids than their dogs and had kids who turned feral as well... It would be interesting to see if there's a correlation between owner drug use and dog attacks.
Well, woof. I’d still want to know how the danger from the dog correlates to the attitudes of the people having the dog. Maybe dogs can read, and follow along with, a ‘tude better than we might think. They know loyalty, not morality in any human sense.
I see enough pictures of pits with kittens frolicking unharmed around them, even swatting them on the nose, to believe there has to be an important unconsidered factor here. I think it’s quite likely to be the loyalty of the dog combined with the expectations of the owners which in turn embraces intangibles that dogs don’t even understand, like “reputation.”
Similar to what I asked. Is it really a matter of the dogs being “good dogs” — at following along with the attitudes of the owners, which are sometimes very bad people?
It’s sad when pits bulls rip family/friends/strangers apart and then pit apologists say the people had it coming. Blame the victim. Sad.
It may be that the dog was a little TOO eager to please the owners... reading transient moods as though they were ways to relate to others in general. Most of the attacks are on strangers.
A Boerboel is a much better dog. You can leave it untended with your infants and it will protect them to the death.

Re strangers, pit buls “get out” of their enclosures and go hunting...for people and pets. That isn’t normal domesticated pet behavior. Re Family: Per the statistics above, 52% of the people pit bulls killed were family or household member.
Youre totally full of shite
Oozing out your vapid pit bull hating brain
A bull mastiff is a molasser type big dog with many variations around the world including St Bernards and Pyrenees and other mastiffs and Rotts and so forth
A pit bull or staffie which btw is one of several catch style dog breeds used in England and the US historically for years is essentially a common terrier mixed with a bulldog
Thats what pit bulls originate from centuries ago
A mastiff is a big pit bull..lol
Youre a fool.
We people who own a Rotts and Dobies and Mastiffs and Dogos and Catahoulas and Shepherds and whatnot that might scare your snowflake ass aint giving em up and going to Yorkies and Maltese or some goofy Summers Eve commercial Golden Retriever loping through the meadow in the filtered sun glint
We own guard dogs cause we like it and if you dont then kiss my ass.
Its like black guns and race cars and loud pickups....if you dont like it then live where there arent any
And all you keyboard commandos who are gonna shoot my dogs on sight
Just try it
Bring your own body bags
You shoot my dogs(or my horses youre probably scared of horses too) and your life is in danger and where I live its be hard to convict me
Sometimes I wonder if Free Republic can get stupider and damn if it doesnt
Just so your dumb pit bull freaked out ass knows what a Molosser is

Onlookers watched in horror? Just watched?

I’ve seen that before in pit bull attacks - the violence is so extreme that some parents report that they couldn’t make themselves reach into the center of the mayhem for their kid. One father hated himself later when he couldn’t make himself reach into the area (even with a stick) where 3 pit bulls were slashing his son. It was bizarre - when he arrived on scene having been told his son was being attacked by 3 pits, he said that the victim on the ground being attacked did not have his sons shoes or clothing (all he could see, he said) so it must not be his son and so he left “urgently” to go “find” his son. Later he admitted he KNEW it was his son. It must be shock then? Too horrible for a parent to cope with? I don’t know. With pits, I’ve read accounts where “it looked like a war zone” etc. - more gore than people can understand. Watch a pit rip strips of flesh off a human - sometimes they are seen to eat it. One kid was walking along the outside of a gated property. The pit bulls reached under the gate and pulled him under, disemboweled him as if he were prey/food. The judge and jurors were devastated watching that.
One variable that such studies have failed to address is what attitudes the owners had. Maybe the pits are better than some other breeds at expressing it in that manner, and deserve extra caution and respect. I’d still say a dog loyal to a relatively good person should be less likely to wreak havoc.
