Yes. However, there are people now breeding to increase the size considerably. A “Hulk” line exists, the male being given as 175 pounds.

One is starting to go to coyote size there.

Country hick dogs might not be the best city slick dogs, too. There is such a thing as common sense.

I see “bull mastiff” being referred to by the name “Presa Canario”, which is essentially a giant pit bull.

A problem is a bull dog is a pit bull, to include the “Old White Southern” or “American Bulldog. And there are several different breeds of Mastiffs.

Please define your terms and breeds when giving examples or making comparisons. It is most useful for clarity. Thank you.

Coyotes do not normally weigh more than approximately 40 pounds.

“Why Do We Call Them ‘Pit Bull Type Dogs’?”

Same reason know-nothings call black rifles “assault-style weapons”. They don’t know any better nor do they care to.

Wolf weight ranges are given from 60-110 pounds at wikipedia.

Here is youtuber “Mister Bill” from McCook, Nebraska who posts short, non-monetized videos. I enjoy his shooting video and talk on William Tell, entitled “Willam Tell, Then and Now”. I believe you may enjoy it, too.

Until the late 19th century, the only pedigree that mattered for any bulldog was its fighting pedigree – the list of kills it had committed on some other bulldog in the fighting pit.

It wasn’t until early in the 20th century, as dogfighting declined, that the breeders of these dogs sought other ways to sell them. They turned to the new kennel clubs, which had been established to cater to the upper class hobby of breeding dogs for shows.

After much lobbying, the 1930s saw the registration and re-branding of the pit fighting bulldogs by various kennel clubs, always with a name intended to hide the type’s bloody history (eg, changing this molosser’s name from bulldog to ‘Staffordshire terrier’).

Since that first deception, many new breed clubs have arisen, dedicated to producing slight physical variation in the fighting bulldog so as to claim a new pit bull type ‘breed’ all their own (eg, American Bully, Pit Bull XXL, Olde English Bulldogge, American Bulldog).

With respect to dog-bite related fatalities, when the rates are computed by breed (fatalities per 100,000 dogs), no less than eight dog breeds had a higher rate of fatalities than the dreaded pit bull.

In order, starting with the worst:************

References, please and country of origin for the data and date of compilation of data. Anything less is a disservice to the readers.

57 dog attack deaths & 645 disfigurements in 2017, led by pit bulls

The reason for that is that there are a lot of Pit Bulls in America, and fewer Dobermans—but Doberman Pinschers as a breed are more dangerous. You're citing raw numbers for a breed (Pit Bulls) that is far more common than Doberman Pinschers. The research I cited was regarding the rate of fatal attacks (per 100,000 dogs) of various breeds.

Therefore, to reiterate: if you (or, say, your child) are in the presence of a Doberman Pinscher, that dog is more likely to kill you (or, say, your child) than if you're in the presence of a Pit Bull.

Of course, you're probably more likely to be killed by a Pit Bull—but that's because there are a lot more Pit Bulls around. It's not because individual Pit Bulls are more dangerous than individual Dobermans.

I repeat: Doberman Pinscher's (for example)—as individual animals—are a more dangerous breed than Pit Bulls with respect to fatal attacks on humans. This means that if Doberman Pinschers were as numerous as Pit Bulls, they would cause even more fatalities than Pits!

Got it?

Breed haters are never interested in facts. I have noticed a lowering of the conversation in many posts, and many new people who sling offensive one liners many with racial overtones or sexual innuendos, thinking they are witty.

Amen! There has been a dumbing down. I used to read the comments for insight, personal experiences, perspective from the freeper community. Lately I find myself just going directly to the linked article and bypassing comments.

My daughter has a bull mastiff and he is the sweetest dog I’ve ever known. He loves kittens and cats too.
