Report: Scientists Find Alzheimer’s Treatment While Trying To Cure Diabetes
CBS New York ^ | January 2, 2018

Posted on 01/02/2018 1:27:46 PM PST by nickcarraway

Although their goal was to cure diabetes, scientists may have stumbled onto a new medication to help treat the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

According to a press release from researchers at Lancaster University, a new drug being tested for diabetes patients was found to have “significantly reversed memory loss” in test subjects and is now being examined as possible treatment for neurodegenerative disorders.

The medication, known as a triple receptor drug — or “triple agonist” — reportedly works in multiple ways to protect the brain against degeneration and promote growth. Researchers say that a study of mice being given the drug found that the animals had an increased ability to learn and retain memories.

“These very promising outcomes demonstrate the efficacy of these novel multiple receptor drugs that originally were developed to treat type 2 diabetes,” Professor Christian Holscher said in the release.

The scientists added that the mice showed a decrease in chronic inflammation and amyloid plaques in the brain, which have been linked to the development of Alzheimer’s in people.

“With no new treatments in nearly 15 years, we need to find new ways of tackling Alzheimer’s,” Dr. Doug Brown of the Alzheimer’s Society said. “It’s imperative that we explore whether drugs developed to treat other conditions can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.”

The discovery of the diabetes drug’s side-effect is not a complete coincidence to the researchers. The findings, published in the journal Brain Research, point to the link between some of the symptoms of diabetes and their link to Alzheimer’s. Insulin desensitisation is not only one of the key effects suffered by diabetes patients, the hormone’s lack of production has also reportedly been observed in the brains of people affected by the memory-stealing disorder.

If sugar reduction is hard....eat more good fat...grass fed butter, olive oil, etc...it really does help (former sugar holic)

That would be sensible advice, except for the fact that there are now substances that *induce* diabetes, despite diet.

For example, statin drugs used to treat high cholesterol (most of which is created by the liver, not from food), have a clear association with induced diabetes. A large study done in Finland showed an almost 50 percent increase above normal levels in those taking statin drugs.

A number of other drugs have been linked with an increased risk development of type 2 diabetes. Corticosteroids, Thiazide diuretics, Beta-blockers and Antipsychotics.

Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) — common chemicals found in soaps, nail polishes, hair sprays, perfumes, and moisturizers. Women with the highest levels of phthalates in their urine had a 70 percent higher risk of diabetes than women with the lowest levels of phthalates in their bodies.

Other chemicals that significantly increase the likelihood of induced diabetes include: Arsenic, PCBs, and Dioxins.

The artificial sweetener sucralose (Splenda) can adversely affect how some people metabolize sugar. It causes too much insulin to be secreted, which keeps fat from being broken down for energy, making it hard to lose weight. And chronically high insulin levels can lead to insulin resistance, a precursor to type-2 diabetes.

Just reducing sugar is not enough

Sugar is probably less harmful than flour. I discovered Atkins years ago and it works. I had bunch of stents installed about 10 years ago and had them checked a month or so ago still good and I drink nearly a pint of heavy crème in my coffee every day. My biggest trouble is I have lost my taste for everything. Steak sucks, bacon sucks.......That makes Atkins very hard indeed.

Yeah, I tried Atkins once. It was awful. But the keto diet allows you to have some carbs. You have to use a keto conversion, to know exactly how many carbs, proteins and fats to eat. Strawberries and other berries are allowed. There’s all kinds of low carb bread recipes available. Some are good. We’ve eaten a lot of bedevilled eggs the past couple days. Zero carbs, just fat and protein. Right now, I’m eating a cheeseburger on low carb toast, with a tiny bit of onion, pickle and mustard. It really isn’t a bad diet at all. My doctor was happy about it.

At this point this is only great news for elderly mice.

Or diabetics with Alzheimer's.

So, you like a little coffee with your cream?

I’m eating a cheeseburger on low carb toast, with a tiny bit of onion, pickle and mustard.

Onion pickle and mustard are fattening?

It really isn’t a bad diet at all.

Have you lost a lot of weight?

I lost 8 lbs in about 2 weeks when I was on it a few months ago. I just restarted it yesterday. Everything I’ve read says that it results in a great amount of weight loss. Of course, it’s hard to give up regular bread, potatoes, and other starchy or sweet foods; they’re addictive. I suppose your brain and body get upset when it doesn’t get what it’s used to. IIRC, I felt a little rough for a couple of days when I first tried it before. But I tried Atkins many years ago, and it was soooo boring. At least now, there’s all kinds of recipes on the internet for good substitutions for the foods you miss.

I’m on 1,000 twice a day, plus insulin, and my A1C isn’t nearly that good.

Sorry to hear.

My younger brother is the same as you.

My A1C has never been above 6.9.

Statins are another killer.

Do other artificial sweeteners drive insulin responses too?

https://www.health.harvard.edu/diabetes/ask-the-doctor-do-artificial-sweeteners-cause-insulin-resistance

So far they have identified two, but research is ongoing.

Fructose may be even worse, as well as causing fatty liver.

https://idmprogram.com/fructose-causes-insulin-resistance-hormonal-obesity-xxxii/

But, once again, let me recommend Gymnema. A friend who even *with* an insulin pump tracked as high as 400 blood glucose, was able to take her numbers down by 200 points with just a normal dose (with doctor’s permission). I don’t know if she was able to lop off another 100 points, down to normal range with a larger dose, but I would suspect so.

Stuff works. Plus it is inexpensive and readily available on both ebay and Amazon, as well as a little more expensive at health food stores.

There are a lot of Keto Gurus on YouTube I watch their videos to get ideas some are better than others. I use Sous Vide to make cheap cuts of meat edible. Sous Vide a ham at 145 for 3 or 4 hours and see how ham should be.

I use a sweet Mustard on lots of things. We have chickens so plenty of eggs so I boil them and use a sweetened mustard mayonnaise mix and dollop it on the boiled eggs. Sous Vide eggs at 185 degrees for 25 minutes and avoid that green yolk.

Has the TAME trial even started or are they still waiting on financing ? I have heard differing accounts. Although there is one almost complete (MILES) with prediabetics on metformin which should be quite interesting.

I can't answer you questions.

The real cure is to get rid of sugar in its many forms from one’s diet.

Here is the money post, above.

Mom has Alzheimer’s and she is SUGAR CRAZY. Since I control her diet, she only get one serving of fruit a day, after a protein rich breakfast, and she gets dessert every night after a protein rich dinner because she is old and dessert is the highlight of her life. I’m not gong to deny it her. She eats no bread or starch, just proteins and fats and veggies.

But she is far gone. If your loved one is just starting with memory problems, for all the evidence being gathered, Alzheimer’s patients need to get rid of all sugars in their diet. It’s very depressing to see what they feed dementia patients in the homes. At least my mom is with me and eats a very healthy diet. And still gets her one dessert a day just because. It won’t save the damage done to deny her.
