This holiday season, Santa Cruz County Sheriff's deputies will place decoy holiday gift packages in front of homes to nab thieves.
The boxes contain GPS devices, and whoever steals them will be arrested.
Advertisement "You steal a package, you're going to go to jail," Sgt. Chris Clark said. "Don't be a Grinch."
Decoy packages will be planted in front of houses owned by residents who agree to participate in the sting.
The Sheriff's Office put together a funny Facebook video to announce their unique plan. Watch it in the video players above or below.
Don’t think so. I think some animals will be penned for Xmas.
Entrapment —the action of tricking someone into committing a crime in order to secure their prosecution.
Example: “his style of investigation constitutes entrapment.”
I don’t think that qualifies as entrapment. Unless am officer pointed the package out and suggested stealing it, to the malefactor.
Which holiday do they mean? Holiday gift packages... Veterans Day maybe?
I believe youre correct. A package on someones porch isnt directed at any one person and you cant be innocently trapped into stealing it.
Read the definition again.
Man I have never stolen anything in my life but that vehicle... (To the mission impossible theme) I want it. ;-)
Rather than a GPS device, 4 lbs of C-4 and a remote detonator will get their attention tout-de-suite!
If you feel so strongly, then go steal one of those packages .... and let the whining commence!!!!
My friends’ neighborhood watch came up with a brilliant way to get porch thieves to leave packages alone: put out faux packages filled with rubbish. I would also add used kitty litter. Thieves take packages home and get a lovely surprise.
How about Kwanzaa? I'm sure that's widely celebrated in Santa Cruz, Los Gatos, Saratoga and Los Altos Hills.
#3. Wrong about “entrapment”. Entrapment entails making someone do something illegal that they wouldn’t normally do.
This old “bait box” trick has been legal for decades. Cops used “bikes” to catch a lot of thieves and in DC, the police mounted two great “sting” operations to catch thieves, burglars, robbers. One was called “GYA” (Got You Again). Even wrote a book about it.
If you trespass to commit a criminal act (i.e. theft), then there is no entrapment.
Please learn the law. I did.
He said it didn't take long, a car full of ‘yutes’ drove up, grabbed the suitcase and sped off with their prize. Seconds later, he said the car came to a sudden stop and looked like a popcorn kernel popping. He'd never seen anyone move so fast, they were flying out of the doors and windows.
They were unable to catch the thieves, but the thefts in town stopped.
Indeed. Package thefts off porches are so prevalent, one of the police departments in the N TX area put out an offer to their residents to have online orders delivered to police station. Officers will store them in station until people can pick up the packages.
