An interesting/entertaining tactic I heard about from a relative during his youth in Oklahoma during the ‘30s to reduce thievery in his town was to catch some raccoons, place them in a suitcase, set the suitcase at the side of the road out of town, then observe.

He said it didn't take long, a car full of ‘yutes’ drove up, grabbed the suitcase and sped off with their prize. Seconds later, he said the car came to a sudden stop and looked like a popcorn kernel popping. He'd never seen anyone move so fast, they were flying out of the doors and windows.

They were unable to catch the thieves, but the thefts in town stopped.

Indeed. Package thefts off porches are so prevalent, one of the police departments in the N TX area put out an offer to their residents to have online orders delivered to police station. Officers will store them in station until people can pick up the packages.
