My friends’ neighborhood watch came up with a brilliant way to get porch thieves to leave packages alone: put out faux packages filled with rubbish. I would also add used kitty litter. Thieves take packages home and get a lovely surprise.

An interesting/entertaining tactic I heard about from a relative during his youth in Oklahoma during the ‘30s to reduce thievery in his town was to catch some raccoons, place them in a suitcase, set the suitcase at the side of the road out of town, then observe.

He said it didn't take long, a car full of ‘yutes’ drove up, grabbed the suitcase and sped off with their prize. Seconds later, he said the car came to a sudden stop and looked like a popcorn kernel popping. He'd never seen anyone move so fast, they were flying out of the doors and windows.

They were unable to catch the thieves, but the thefts in town stopped.
