Upsurge in big earthquakes predicted for 2018 as Earth rotation slows
Scientists say number of severe quakes is likely to rise strongly next year because of a periodic slowing of the Earth’s rotation
Scientists have warned there could be a big increase in numbers of devastating earthquakes around the world next year. They believe variations in the speed of Earth’s rotation could trigger intense seismic activity, particularly in heavily populated tropical regions.
Although such fluctuations in rotation are small – changing the length of the day by a millisecond – they could still be implicated in the release of vast amounts of underground energy, it is argued.
The link between Earth’s rotation and seismic activity was highlighted last month in a paper by Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado in Boulder and Rebecca Bendick of the University of Montana in Missoula presented at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America.
“The correlation between Earth’s rotation and earthquake activity is strong and suggests there is going to be an increase in numbers of intense earthquakes next year,” Bilham told the Observer last week.
In their study, Bilham and Bendick looked at earthquakes of magnitude 7 and greater that had occurred since 1900. “Major earthquakes have been well recorded for more than a century and that gives us a good record to study,” said Bilham.

We envisage the weak forces responsible for clustering originate from lithospheric strain induced by seismicity itself, by finite strains over teleseismic distances, or by other sources of lithospheric loading such as Earth's variable rotation. For example, quasi-periodic maxima in rotational deceleration are accompanied by increased global seismicity at multidecadal intervals.

OMG! How awful! Quick, raise taxes on everything and send all this $ to the governments so they could make the earth’s rotation speed up! After all, we know how all powerful governments are! They can regulate the climate after all, one big freaking thermostat I tell you!
No, planes should take off and land facing east. They should just run up their engines with the brakes on a few seconds longer. The thrust from the fixed plane will speed the earth up. Your plan would slow it down. Same with landing. Land a little faster. When the brakes grab, the energy from the slowing plane will be transferred to the earth’s rotation.

“It’s really simple, you see global warming causes the clouds to expand and touch the earth acting like brakes thereby causing the earth to slow down. When the clouds drag over mountains it sets up a vibration causing earth quakes. Just basic science.”
Unfortunately as this happens the centrificult force that pulls the clouds away from the Earth’s surface will lessen with the reduced rotational speed causing more drag. I’m afraid we’re doomed.

Atomic clocks, and multiple stellar reference points. Both are quite capable of this level of accuracy, and likely even more accurate.

It’s been slowing down since day one. The old Patriarchs who lived 900 years did so because a year was a whole lot shorter on a faster-spinning orb!
