Upsurge in big earthquakes predicted for 2018 as Earth rotation slows

Scientists say number of severe quakes is likely to rise strongly next year because of a periodic slowing of the Earth’s rotation

Scientists have warned there could be a big increase in numbers of devastating earthquakes around the world next year. They believe variations in the speed of Earth’s rotation could trigger intense seismic activity, particularly in heavily populated tropical regions.

Although such fluctuations in rotation are small – changing the length of the day by a millisecond – they could still be implicated in the release of vast amounts of underground energy, it is argued.

The link between Earth’s rotation and seismic activity was highlighted last month in a paper by Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado in Boulder and Rebecca Bendick of the University of Montana in Missoula presented at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America.

“The correlation between Earth’s rotation and earthquake activity is strong and suggests there is going to be an increase in numbers of intense earthquakes next year,” Bilham told the Observer last week.

In their study, Bilham and Bendick looked at earthquakes of magnitude 7 and greater that had occurred since 1900. “Major earthquakes have been well recorded for more than a century and that gives us a good record to study,” said Bilham.

Maybe we could ask the Earth to just ease on the brakes a little bit at a time so it wouldn't shake too much?

(do I need a sarcasm tag? Sometimes I think it's obvious and then I get ripped)

It’ll be blamed on global warming. Or Donald Trump.

Must be slowing because of all the people - that’s a lot of weight to be toting around.....wonder where all that weight comes from.....it’s not so much slowing as it is trying to tip over in the opposite direction from all the weight....

The entire change in the rate of earth’s rotation since 1820 is about 0.002 seconds per day, or two entire milliseconds. A slowing of one or two milliseconds per day in the span of a year would be unprecedented.

The slowing is caused by transfer of angular momentum from earth’s rotation to the moon’s orbit (lengthening the period of a lunar month as well). The average rate of energy transfer is about one gigawatt. So a one millisecond change in the earth’s rotation rate would require about a gigawatt-century of energy.

Short term fluctuations are mostly attributed to swapping of angular momentum between the earth’s mantle and core.

How do they measure the rotation down to milliseconds? What reference do they use since everything in the solar system is moving?

Somehow I doubt the day has increased by 2-3 minutes since 1820. Even a change of .3 seconds in that time period seems rather high.

I would assume it to be the stars in relation to Polaris.

Who knew, Congressman Johnson was right all along! Love Adm Willards response, lol!

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) is raising some eyebrows with a comment he made about the U.S. territory of Guam during a House Armed Services Committee hearing last Thursday.

In a discussion regarding a planned military buildup on the Pacific island, Johnson expressed some concerns about the plans to Adm. Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific fleet.

“My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize,” Johnson said. Willard paused and replied, “We don’t anticipate that.”

Right!! AND how well CALIBRATED is the device measuring it?? ;-)

So the sun is going into a solar minimum. Since when and how is the earths rotation slowing. If that is true, our days and nights will increase. No comment on that from ? Yet it will increase the earths earth quakes?

It’s really simple, you see global warming causes the clouds to expand and touch the earth acting like brakes thereby causing the earth to slow down. When the clouds drag over mountains it sets up a vibration causing earth quakes. Just basic science.

Everybody help the Earth! At 12 noon, January 1, all vehicles will be asked to drive West. This will help propel the Earth to the East, and help reduce the slowdown. Cars will be asked NOT to go West, as that will increase the slowdown. North and South travel will not be affected, so feel free to go as far and as fast as you want in three directions: West, North and South.

Trains and buses will follow this recommendation as well.

Air travel will not be affected, but planes will be asked to take off facing West, North or South.

Please plan accordingly.

A 1 millisecond shift on an object 8,000 miles in diameter? It’s like a mosquito pushing on an elephant.

From the actual paper: "numerous studies demonstrate that the composite temporal distribution of major earthquakes in the instrumental record is indistinguishable from random"

Nothing more needs to be said.

Anyone here follow Dutchsince? The guy has been forecasting earthquakes for years and because he has no “scientific degree”, the professional seismologist have tried to destroy him. Lately they have put his site on the “Fake News” list and I think the WaPo slimed him just yesterday. The professionals have said earthquakes cannot be forecast, yet he has an approx 80% accuracy rate. Now these same scientist are using “fear porn” predicting more quakes. So...predictable.

Actually, it is all Milankovitch's fault. Really!
