A diet designed to imitate the effects of fasting appears to reverse diabetes by reprogramming cells, a new USC-led study shows.
"Cycles of a fasting-mimicking diet and a normal diet essentially reprogrammed non-insulin-producing cells into insulin-producing cells," said Longo, who is also a professor of biological sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. "By activating the regeneration of pancreatic cells, we were able to rescue mice from late-stage type 1 and type 2 diabetes. We also reactivated insulin production in human pancreatic cells from type 1 diabetes patients."
The reprogrammed adult cells and organs prompted a regeneration in which damaged cells were replaced with new functional ones, he said.
In type 1 and late-stage type 2 diabetes, the pancreas loses insulin-producing beta cells, increasing instability in blood sugar levels. The study showed a remarkable reversal of diabetes in mice placed on the fasting-mimicking diet for four days each week. They regained healthy insulin production, reduced insulin resistance and demonstrated more stable levels of blood glucose. This was the case even for mice in the later stages of the disease.
The diet cycles switched on genes in the adult mice that are normally active only in the developing pancreases of fetal mice. The genes set off production of a protein, neurogenin-3 (Ngn3); thus, generating new, healthy insulin-producing beta cells.

I am on an 800 cal/day diet right now. That initial period where you feel like crap goes away. I am fine and losing rapidly about 10# per month. Sometimes more.
Exercise, especially jumping on a trampoline, does a lot to kick it all into gear. Something about the thymus system.
Oh. I told you I was an idiot.....
Ive eaten just one meal a day for 9 months now and have lost 40 pounds. There are numerous benefits...just search for intermittent fasting or one meal a day.
Very true! This year, I started doing a daily 16 hour fast, eating only between 10 AM and 6 PM and lost 25 pounds over two months, along with a high-fat, low carb diet. It works great, and my doctor tells me I’m no longer pre-diabetic.
That is very interesting. Thanks.
.
I occasionally fast as I feel it cleanses and detoxes
Yes, decreasing inflammation in general, which has implications for autoimmune diseases, devastating neurologic diseases, arthritis, cancer, etc.
If people would do intermittent fasting and avoid packaged/processed foods, health costs would plummet and this would literally be a new country. But alas, food and drug companies. And advertising.
Enough healthy fats and protein that you should not be losing muscle.
The website mercola.com is one I have found to be very reliable - he talks a lot about intermittent fasting and a ketogenic diet. It is meant to cycle, not do for weeks on end.
Please explain. 36 hours fasting per week or continuous regime of one meal every 36 hours?
I use a combination of cinnamon and apple cider vinegar and it seems to keep my A1c at approx. 5.5
Thanks for all the useful info on this horrible disease.
Sackcloth, prayer and fasting go very well together
Here's the plan I've used. Time elapsed between 'fast' days and 'non-fast' days...approx. 36 hours. I substitute a lot with like-kind items to avoid menu fatigue.
Thanks. So, the every other day fasting time is what helps reset the insulin. It wouldn’t work to spread the food out evenly across the days, right?
Ping
So essentially, you are correct. It's the reset that's the goal. But spreading it out like the 'grazing' thing many speak of is not going to illicit the same effect.
I kept/keep detailed records of my frequent blood sugar testing results while fasting. I see good results and have been able to cut back on the amount of insulin I use. My hope is to eliminate it completely someday.
