I am on an 800 cal/day diet right now. That initial period where you feel like crap goes away. I am fine and losing rapidly about 10# per month. Sometimes more.

I have found that by eating 1400/day and increasing my exercise I can lose gradually. At 1200/day I get a lot of headaches and I am ravenous in the evening.

Exercise, especially jumping on a trampoline, does a lot to kick it all into gear. Something about the thymus system.
