On July 2nd we observe National Anisette Day. Anisette is an anise-flavored liqueur that is made by distilling aniseed and sometimes adding a sugar syrup. Anisette is popular in Spain, Italy, Portugal and France.
Pure Anisette should not be drunk straight as its alcoholic content is high enough to cause irritation to the throat. However, mixing it in with coffee, gin, bourbon or water will bring out a bit of a sweet flavor. To enjoy this sweetness without drinking, you can make Anisette cookies!
If you are one to grab all of the black jelly beans at Easter, you will surely enjoy this day and the drink that makes it unique, Anisette.

Oh yeah mixing it with gin or bourbon will tame the fire LOL
I was about to say ‘Ouzo’. Maybe the word you used means the same liqueur. It pours out clear and turns whitish when combined with ice. Powerful stuff when purchased in Greece.
Thats the stuff
It’s only good for one thing: making gravlax. Difficult to get a taste for but it is cultural— witness, Ouzo, Arak, etc.
lee martell - I was about to say Ouzo.
I knew some Greek Gangsters who would regularly drink five star Ouzo, and once I got to try seven star Ouzo. Yummy!
Over Ice is Nice.
Can add a bit of water if you want to savor it longer without getting loopy.
I has to drag a greek shipmate out of a greek wedding at 7Am in France, they were smashing dishes and drinking ouzo lol
A line I still remember after decades is from Barefoot In The Park. It's between two characters after a night of drinking Ouzo:
Ethel: I feel like weve died and gone to heaven. . .only we had to climb up.
Paul: Struck down in the prime of life.
Ethel: It isnt exactly that I feel sick. . .just kind of numb. I cant make a fist.
Paul: You want to hear something frightening? My teeth feel soft.
Tastes a little like fennel, no?
I haven’t drank any since the early 1980’s, but I’ve never forgotten the experience. I was in Athens Greece while in the Navy.
In my experience, Ouzo stays in the system for quite a while.
I recall drinking on a Friday, recovering on a Saturday, then as soon as I drank a lot of water on Sunday, I felt drunk again. Maybe I should have eaten more at the start. I don’t know what’s really in that brand, although there are rumors.
Worst hangover eve!
Nasty stuff i hate black licorice
.
Anise and Fennel are of the same plant family.
.
That was a good play (later movie) written by Neil Simon.
Jane Fonda starred in the movie version, back when all she did was act and make fun movies. Then she got envious of people like Vanessa Redgrave an social activist who was also from a famous family of actors, and the rest is history.
That’s the stuff.
Fugeabout absinthe
Metaxa is swill but gets the job done. Babrayanni is great, and Ouzo Mini is the best (but it's not available in the US).
I loved the pic of the I.V. Ouzo drip!
Rock on, DoodleBob!
