New evidence suggests that the famous fossilised human ancestor dubbed "Lucy" by scientists died falling from a great height - probably out of a tree. CT scans have shown injuries to her bones similar to those suffered by modern humans in similar falls. The 3.2 million-year-old hominin was found on a treed flood plain, making a branch her most likely final perch. It bolsters the view that her species - Australopithecus afarensis - spent at least some of its life in the trees.

I wonder if she was doing something stupid when she fell out of it — like swinging from a weak branch to impress her friends. Ironically, Lucy may be the original Darwin Award winner.

Yes, but what was she doing in that tree?
I’m thinking she was trying to get better phone reception.

out on a limb trying to escape a tiger, and the limb broke
Wouldn’t the tiger (or whatever) simply have eaten her afterward?

I’m afraid I have to agree with Lucy’s discover, Donald Johnson, that fractures were due to natural geological forces on the fossil long after her death. Johnson has thoroughly studied the fossil and has been quite careful in his conclusions.

Makes sense from a defensive perspective.
Likely fleeing a threat and had misstep and/or encountered weak limb.

Or maybe she was picking apples.

Only when it fits the narrative. When it doesn’t fit the narrative, then it’s “convergent evolution”.
