Astronomy Picture of the Day -- The Horsehead Nebula
NASA ^ | December 16, 2015 | (see photo credit)

Explanation: The Horsehead Nebula is one of the most famous nebulae on the sky. It is visible as the dark indentation to the red emission nebula in the center of the above photograph. The horse-head feature is dark because it is really an opaque dust cloud that lies in front of the bright red emission nebula. Like clouds in Earth's atmosphere, this cosmic cloud has assumed a recognizable shape by chance. After many thousands of years, the internal motions of the cloud will surely alter its appearance. The emission nebula's red color is caused by electrons recombining with protons to form hydrogen atoms. On the image left is the Flame Nebula, an orange-tinged nebula that also contains filaments of dark dust. Just to the lower left of the Horsehead nebula featured picture is a blueish reflection nebulae that preferentially reflects the blue light from nearby stars

And just a few years ago, astronomers thought that ALL of the universe was contained in our Milky Way galaxy. And now we know that our galaxy is just one of seemingly countless numbers of galaxies that can be observed by Hubble. It’s a rather humbling thought.

But a question about the high resolution photos. Why are they copyright to Jose Jiminez Priego? With a google search I found another image that said: Credit: Hubble Legacy Archive, NASA, ESA - Processing: José Jiménez Priego. Is he the guy who takes the Hubble raw pictures and colors them which ties the image to the actual chemical makeup of the cloud we see?

He’s the same guy, presumably. I think this image had appeared in APoD before, but a quick search turned up nothing.

Imagine a solar system inside one of those nebulae. They could not see out beyond their cloud........................

I initially focused on the subject matter indicated, but I am now lost in the breadth and depth of the BACKGROUND! WOW! That is a lot of stars and systems and galaxies.

The Stars Like Dust, Isaac Asimov.

Just a disclaimer, it doesn’t look ANYTHING like that in a telescope.

I have seen the Horsehead in a scope. It’s VERY large and just a darkening in the background of the sky.

The area to the left and attached to the bottom star of the belt (Alnitak) is the Flame (or Oak Tree) nebula. You can see it as some smudges in the glare around said star.

Yes, Mr. Civilizations, you have posted the Horsehead Nebula before,
and it was just as pretty back then. I think it was several years ago
or more, and it was in a much smaller field.

So we couldn’t see all the blue nebulae and other pretty sights.

The giant reddish/orange nebula looks like a giant cardinal to me.

Thank you for the post and ping, my friend.

I think it looks more like a cobra.

Is there already a Cobra Nebula?
