The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
We’re doing garden clean up, too. Corn stalks are down. My daughter is pulling the marigold seeds for next year. I grabbed as many tomatoes as I could that weren’t rotten and dehydrated what was left. I’m done with tomatoes! I blend them up into powder once they’re good and dry. It’s nice to add a teaspoon here and there to soups and casseroles for extra tomato flavor.
We’re considering lots of fruit trees and more berry bushes next year. I love fall because I get to start planning and daydreaming about the even better garden we’ll have next year! :0) We’ve never planted a tree of any kind before. Should be interesting!
This is most of the Garlic I planted earlier and I added 2 rows today
This could be the last serious harvest of the blight infected tomato plants
We always have containers - lots of the gallon jug ones in particular (& I do Chinese takeout now & again). I’ve got a little thinking/planning to do as to exactly where to put them, but I should be able to work something out. Spring never comes soon enough for me so to be able to ‘winter sow’ is definitely something I want to try! :-)
I got this craving for red cabbage after reading a couple of recipes in the local paper a couple of weeks ago. They were touting red cabbage as ‘better’ for you than green - that may be so, but I like the color. I have 8 red cabbage plants in the garden, but they are still too small so I bought two (red) heads. I have one left & wanted to make something different out of it so I got online and these are 3 recipes that interested me. The German Casserole is probably the one I’ll make, just using red rather than green cabbage & ground venison - some folks said in the comments it’s a little bland so I’ll add more garlic, etc. & spice it up a bit. With the weather turning colder, these sorts of dishes are becoming more appealing.

ty!
I did the same thing with the tomatoes.
Cut back the cornflowers, which were beautiful this year and pulled out the annuals which were spreading petunias which were great too.
All ready for winter now.
you cook up your cabbage along with onions in lots of butter, and when all done, you add cooked egg noodles, S/P.....
comfy food...
Your stuff always looks amazing.
When I grow up I hope my garden looks as pretty as yours :)
LOL!!! I don’t know how many gardens are left in me after this year as the BP Meds are taking their toil plus I just found out my blood sugar level is 6.7 but it has been a good long life talking to my plants when Lady Bender is busy. I just picked another 2 quarts of strawberries and deadheaded about 30 of our 50 Dahlias.
Still getting all the tomatoes we can eat. Setting out those half dozen plants in early July has turned out to be a good idea. We covered up most of the stuff that's still growing Friday evening, then didn't get the frost that was predicted. The weather guessers are saying at least another week of mild weather is expected. I can't ever remember having tomatoes like this in October. The way things are going I may still have them come November.
Send her down to the Salvation Army store. They have good clothes for cheap prices. Should tide you over til she's back on her feet. LOL
I have been trying to post the garden thread early, but the hotel’s computer is not co-operating. Branson has been great and they are keeping us very busy.
I was hoping that one of you might ping the list for me, just to let everyone know what’s going onn if you can and don’t mind. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
I don’t have your ping list Greeneyes.
Found your list but it’s too late tonight. I will ping them in the morning if you don’t...
We are going to visit Johnny tomorrow. He weighs 130 lbs., more than he has ever weighed and he needs to buy new pants as the ones he has don’t fit anymore.
Greeneyes, I’m glad your surgery was successful. We want you here for a long time to come. :o)
I ate lots of cabbage & noodles when growing up. if times were good there was a little bacon and sour cream in it.
Give Johnny a hug from me. Greeneyes glad all went well!
No garden report this week. Still have those blanket blank potatoes to dig. They were volunteers anyway.Augie are you digging a pond/lake??
Hopefully this will be the last surgery Mrs Texan will have to endure. It is kind of hard to wheel the chair down to the river, we have a similar problem, our laundry lake looks kind of muddy today, so laundry day will have to wait till the rain stops.
My mustard seeds and collards are loving this rain and the garlic is going gangbusters.
