Using sophisticated 3D imaging to analyze several fossil skulls, a study in this week's Nature Scientific Reports found dogs emerged much more recently than previously thought. Other studies in recent years had suggested dogs evolved as early as 30,000 years ago, a period known as the late Paleolithic, when humans were hunter-gatherers.
Abby Grace Drake, a biologist at Skidmore College and one of the co-authors of the latest study, said there is an abundance of evidence -- including the skulls as well as genetic and cultural evidence -- to show dogs arrived instead in the more recent period known as the Neolithic.
"The dog remains from the Neolithic are found buried with humans and adorned with ornaments such as necklaces of deer teeth," Drake told CBS news in an interview.

Right after the night in the doghouse, but just before the divorce.
You’ve probably heard the one: Who loves you more, your wife or your dog? Answer: Lock both in your car trunk, come back and hour later, and see which one is glad to see you.
When he learned to open the fridge and get a bottle of beer for “his best bud”.
Another one: Well it’s time to go home; to kiss the dog and kick the wife.
knowing animals, I am sure the wolf/canine/dog became man’s best friend the first time the wolf smelled meat roasting over a man’s fire.
Interesting side note. An early friendly wolf must have had an upward curl to his tail. Men bred that wolf and the trait remained. They were probably able to recognize the friendly ‘dogs’ from the not-so-friendly wolves by the curl of the tail. To this day, dogs have curly tails, whereas wolves do not.
When Brian Williams captured, tamed and bred wolves into the modern day dogs we call man’s friend.
That roasting meat leads to another question.
Cooked foods is one of the things that allowed our brains to grow. Digestion of raw foods takes up considerable energy and it takes considerable energy to operate our brains. A lot of what we give our dogs is cooked food. I can’t help but wonder if dogs are growing more intelligent as a result. (outside of deliberate breeding for other traits)
Probably the first time they were offered the ice cream bowl to lick clean after dinner.
