When the manager of a Michigan gas station failed to show up for work on time, her third-shift employee did what any of us would do; he left an angry note on the door, locked up and went home.
Okay, most of us would never do it. But how awesome was it that he did?
The BP manager, who declined to be named, said she was running 30 minutes late because she slept through her alarm.
The tardy manager also said she was surprised that Joe left the note on the door instead of calling her before leaving the store.

Wasn’t it the responsibility of the “manager” to call into work and explain that (s)he would be running late?
Without authorization, employees can’t just extend their hours.
He should’ve called the late employee. Really?
I’m not sure exactly what you mean by your last really, but I suspect this wasn’t the first time the manager slept in and the employee, who may have other responsibilities, was just fed up with it.
Initially, this is hilarious. On reflection, it is a wonderfully succinct indictment of this manager’s leadership style. One can only suspect that the manager would not have been pleased had the shoe been on the other foot.
It should be the manager who is reprimanded, even fired, IMO.
The manager said Joe was in the wrong. She says he should've called her. It was her responsibility to call in (as he wrote in his note).
I agree. The manager was completely in the wrong.
It doesn't work that way. It has never worked that way.
But a lot of leaders don't have a clue what leadership means (Obama is a grade A example of this). And a lot of workers do think that they are owed a paycheck and don't really need to make much of an effort.
Our society has become very broken.
The manager was wrong for not calling, but public ridicule of the manager does not bode well for the employee. The help wanted sign next to the note is probably prescient.
God forbid an employee should work an extra hour unexpectedly. Hard to access the whole situation without all the facts but without extenuating services I would fire the guy.
Amazing whats passing for news today.
If employees are disgruntled or irresponsible they will stick it to the manager whenever the situation arises.
Running 30 minutes late is not 1 hour+.
Having worked at a gas station I will side with Joe.
When you have been up all night and your replacement does not show it is annoying.
When you have to get home because you have kids and your spouse who works first shift has to get to her job you get a bit upset.
The employee risked and will lose nothing.
Zip.
Nada.
If you do not understand this, you have never had a manager like this.
This idiot manager was always going to fire her subordinants no mater how exemplary their work to cover for the things she doesn’t get done.
So. The job would be lost rgardless, and likely the supervisor has left a long string of people fired to cover for her lackadaisical habits throughout her career.
The guy knew what he was doing and had nothing to lose. The only thing this changes is that people who figure out who the boss was here mow have advance notice should they wind up in her employ.
Nailed it.
The Help Wanted sign is probably perpetual because the lousy manager burns through employees with her be irresponsible, then blame the employee behavior.
Fact 1. There was a phone.
Fact 2. The supervisor should have called but did not. There is close to zero chance that company policy does not mandate this.
Fact 3. The supervisor needs to be fired badly.
Fact 4. If you are in a leadership position and think the problem here is that the employee needs firing while retaining the supervisor, you need to be fired.
Fact 5. You have no defense for fact five.
Agreed!
I would fire the supervisor badly. Just like they performed their management functions. ;-)
And I'd fire the manager. And probably whoever thought the manager should be a manager. Sounds like the employee might make good manager material. And that you would not.
Reasonable assumptions:
This isn’t the first time that this has happened.
On previous occasions, the manager did not authorize overtime or even straight time for the additional hours as to do so would expose the manager’s failings.
The manager accepts no excuses from employees.
This business is likely to fail if the owner doesn’t come up with a new manager - soon.
I’d fire the jackass who wrote the note.
