Have you tried getting a pediatrician?

You better contact your state and local officials, pronto.

You’re about to welcome a new baby into your lives. Of course you’re concerned. I did a quick search, but didn’t find anything. I’ll keep looking, and in the meantime, I know that there are a number of FReepers who may have some insight into this. Hang in there, FRiend.

The only time that I have seen this is if the hospital will allow deliveries, but does not staff pediatricians for birthing due to costs or retaining them, thus you need to have one available.
This is not uncommon in areas where not a lot of babies are delivered on a regular basis (like rural areas).

Hope they find a good pediatrician...fast. Might want to talk to the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), too.

Not ANOTHER kidnapping by the state is it? Soon people will have their babies at home, not get them social security numbers and take to hiding them in the bulrushes.

This is SCARY!

(Did anyone see that Justina was put into foster care and in a similar case in Massachusetts a boy was taken away from parents for no apparent reason and put up for adoption?! Both instances were associated with Boston Children’s Hospital)

I remember the hospital asking what Pediatrician I was going to use. I had no problem telling them. I don’t know if it was required. I would just give them a name and go on. But that is just my opinion. I understand completely your concerns of why u do not think it should b a requirement to bring your baby home and I agree with you. Best of luck to your family.

Both of my children were born by C-Section, and the pediatrician, pre-selected, attended both births, even though the first was not scheduled. It seemed to be a good idea to me at the time. ? I don’t think it is a law (in Nebraska, at least).

If you don’t already know which pediatrician you will use, just pick a name and write it on there and never go see that person if you don’t want to. They can’t force you to go to a certain doctor, a pox on them.

Don’t you have a pediatrician that you see for your other children?

The hospital is trying to ensure that you have made arrangements for adequate medical care for the new baby. I wouldn’t read too much into it.

Very common requirement.

You should want your baby checked and cleared by your own pediatrician prior to discharge anyway. Since you mentioned that you have other children, I would suppose that you have a pediatrician with whom you are comfortable.

Best wishes!

find another hospital and see if they say the same thign

if they ALL say that get yourself a lot of boiling water and do it yourself (they never say what the boiling water is for, so I think it’s just to keep dad occupied and away)

Try not to worry. The hospital staff probably just needs a name for hospital records. Ask the hospital staff to refer you to a pediatrician. Or maybe the OBGYN or midwife will refer you to one. That’s how we found our children’s pediatrician.

Then you’ll have a name to give the hospital before you leave with your baby. That pediatrician might visit your baby in the hospital, too.

After leaving the hospital, you can bring your baby to a different pediatrician, if you like.

had my first a couple decades ago, and the hospital required the name of a pediatrician before you checked out. As it turned out, the pediatrician on call was perfect for us, so we put his name down.

my understanding at the time was for records of tests done at the hospital to be sent to a pediatrician for follow up in case there is a problem - especially since discharge is now typically one day. bilirubin problems can crop up - happened with my second child - you’ll need a pediatrician for follow-up blood test results.

My wife is about 2 weeks away from giving birth. The hospital contacted her today and told her that they would not release the baby until we have given them a pediatrician's name.

Oh, I'm guessing after the standard 72 hours of post-natal care, which is all virtually every insurance company will pay for (unless the mother or child has complications.) The hospital will be ready to release the baby real fast when they realize they will no longer be getting paid...

Say you and your wife are illegals. Not only will they kiss your butt they’ll also pay your entire hospital bill.

Likely the hospital also won’t release your child to your care without examining and approving of a suitable carseat no more than 10 years old, and only after you and your wife both watch some mandatory “never shake a baby” videos. These are the breaks... you can fight with the nurses and claim outrage, but in general never fight with a nurse, especially ones who are caring for your wife and child.

Probably a little late in the game to arrange for a home delivery, but if you scramble, maybe you can find a midwife to accommodate your concerns, but it’s a little unlikely one would take your case so close to delivery not knowing anything about the mother’s medical condition.

best thing to do in your case is just find a pediatrician. You are about to have a lot of questions and concerns you never expected, best to know what number to call to get actual answers instead of ignorant or outright dangerous advice from friends and the internet. If you don’t like the pediatrician, switch doctors or just don’t schedule any appointments.
