Very common requirement.
You should want your baby checked and cleared by your own pediatrician prior to discharge anyway. Since you mentioned that you have other children, I would suppose that you have a pediatrician with whom you are comfortable.

“Should” and “must” are two entirely different things. The hospital staff might have been careless with words. It is an issue that should be clarified in writing and outside legal help engaged if there are any questions.

The other kids were born in different states, so this requirement or policy is new to me. I mentioned on another post also that we have 4 nurses in the family as it is.
