By comparing the Neanderthal genome to modern human DNA, the authors of two new studies, both published on Wednesday, show how DNA that humans have inherited from breeding with Neanderthals has shaped us.
Modern humans, Neanderthals, and their sister lineage, Denisovans, descended from a common ancestor. The ancestors of modern humans broke off from this single branch more than 500,000 years ago. The Neanderthals split from the Denisovans some time later. The Neanderthals formed their own lineage that lived in Europe and Asia from around 200,000 years ago to 30,000 years ago. There's also a period when scientists believe that Neanderthals and ancient humans overlapped and interbred.
Researchers from Harvard Medical School, who published their findings in Nature, previously showed that the ancestors of modern humans interbred with Neanderthals between 80,000 years ago and 40,000 years ago, before Neanderthals went extinct.
Any given person of European or Asian descent owes at least 1% of their DNA to the Neanderthal genome.

Human women might have had an advantage sexually, because of better neoteny (looking younger, delicate features, thinner, more child-like face). Human men and Neandertal men were both attracted to human women, hence some interbreeding.
Human men rarely touched Neandertal women. Children of human women with Neandertal men, especially if by rape, were prone to be killed. Humans kill the male hybrids, keep the female hybrids for breeding.
This explains why there are no Neanderthal mitrochondrial or Y-chromosome lineages, along with some Neanderthal DNA. Those mixed-species girls would have bred if fertile, because even the less fit females are acceptable to some male at some time.
One of the Neanderthal genomes decoded came up with a gene for red hair - but not the one in humans.

Blacks have very little Neaderthal in them. Only whites and Asians.
In fact, there is probably a pretty good correlation to Neadertal genes and IQ -— and it’s a positive correlation.

So, your theory is that beer goggles were invented much earlier than the accepted date?
Lots of potentially decisive factors. If modern humans were faster, could throw rocks more accurately, or could organize themselves into larger groups -- any of those could have been a decisive advantage over pure strength.
That rock really tied the hole room together.......
