The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

At Costco avocado oil is under $10 for 1.5 L
Olive oil is a bit ore expensive, over $10
Avocado oil has a smoke point of about 520°so it can be used more healthy-ly for cooking over 300°

Mine lasts me quite a while, and is reasonably priced.
Liked the idea of a cold frame, I have been contemplating building one and now will do so.
I have a discarded sliding glass door double glass (got a little foggy in between the glass) that I will start with, and lots of 4 mill plastic.

Today, I decided on breakfast for supper..It was eggs, pancakes, and bacon cheddar sausage.. I buy those bacon cheddar pork meatballs, and just squash them flat for breakfast sausage...
My New Year's resolution is to just eat food from my freezer, garden, and pantry...I am a meat junkie. It's terrible.. (And, luckily, I bought four lbs of bacon cheddar meatballs yesterday)...
No, I just plant maters and some peppers, and not particularly good at growing those. All else I have given up trying to grow. Wife often fills unused spaces with something, but is rarely successful.
I am a meat-a-holic myself. I buy reduced packs whenever I find them and freeze them. HEB reduces a lot of store made ground pork, sausage links and patty, pinwheels, and such. I also buy hams at the holidays and put them in the freezer too, enough to carry us a year anyway, and for some reason, I bought 3—24lb turkeys? Two people need a 24lb bird, yes? It just disturbs me to pay full price for meat. I guess I need to save what I can to afford some vegetables to go with them. I will reserve my “veggies are way too expensive in Texas” rant for another day.
My new years resolution is to eat whatever I want, just a lot less of it. I lost some weight being sick before Christmas and that motivated me...I think! I hope! I pray!
My second resolution is to be nice to my liberal SIL when I see her in Feb. I will let her get the first four or five jabs in before I rebuke her with truth. LOL She’s always in a foul mood when she leaves the Socialist Mecca of Kalifornica to come to the free state of Texas!
LOL! Well, it was a tad warmer today, but have not had a chance to see how it fared. I’ll look in on it tomorrow and see what happens!

Now I am a dummy at math..25 seeds w/shipping was over 11 dollars..I should've just ordered the 250 Tycoon seeds from Paramount Seeds for 17 dollars..
I spent the day going through seed packets making another list of the seeds that need to be planted 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting outside. I’m going to start those seeds tomorrow and that includes all the tomato seed, celery, (the onion seeds are already up), lemon basil, sweet basil, Brussels sprouts, and all the peppers as soon as they get here, hopefully before this week is over.
I have fingerling potatoes coming and the company will send them when the time is right to plant them so I don’t know when they will come.
The rest of the seeds will be started just before March as we never have cold weather in March. Now that I have typed that, it will be cold in March.
Yes, it would have been a better deal to get the 250 seeds. Next time you will know. :o)
That breakfast for supper thing is what we’re doing tomorrow night. We usually do that a few times a month, especially in the winter.
Tomorrow, it’s cottage-fried yams, with onions & some Anaheim pepper; homemade venison sausage patties; and fried eggs from our chickens.
Tonight, it was left over cheesy cream of potato soup, with sandwiches of hot, homemade pastrami on pumpernickel, with Swiss and sauteed onions & peppers. The soup was made with our own potatoes & leeks.
It is good to eat from home stocks as much as possible. That’s what we grow or hunt it for!
24 POUNDS!? We usually get (shoot) a bird half that size, and it lasts the two of us a week!
With a big bird, I usually remove the leg quarters and the wings, and package those separately from the main body/breast.
Mrs. AR can then stuff and roast the fuselage, while leaving the running gear in the freezer for the BBQ.

Yeah, shoppers frenzy is my excuse. We do have one of those 5 gallon roasters that will hold it. I love having a freezer. lol We keep it packed, the one on the refrigerator, too.
I ordered from Heirloomtomatos.net for the first time this year after having looked at the site for 10 years. I bought 7 packs of seeds and shipping for $17 total. $2 packet for 30 seeds, plus $3 shipping PER ORDER. Each packet had 50-60 seeds(est)maybe more; I should do a count I suppose. Maybe if it stays cold outside, I will count some seeds this afternoon. I have not planted any yet, so we shall see about germination rates. I have always had high germination rates with seeds wherever I bought from. Except for one type of pepper seed last year where I had 0 sprout.
Thanks to Marcella, I got two packs of trombone squish for $5, plus $2.50 shipping from Bountiful Gardens. Not a lot of seeds, I think 15-20 pack, but was affordable shipping.
I will be starting my seeds in about 2 weeks, with target date for planting being Mar1. This give me some wiggle room to plant if Mar1 is too cold or freezing. This is where the gambling begins, when is the last freeze? I had a friend that planted mid-Feb and got away with it that year. But this is what has worked for me in the past, so I stick with it. YMMV

I wanted to try some new plants this year, so my list is a bit different. Last year we grew Brandywine and Cherokee Purple tomatoes, and found that we both liked the Cherokee Purples better, which somewhat surprised us. After that positive experience in “risky gardening”, I decided to try my luck again this season. :)
