The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Well you make up this big bunch of chili in the oven. I call it Greasy Spoon Style Chili. Then you let it cool a bit. Once it’s room temp, you put it in the refrigerator to firm up.

Then you slice it into 10 brick size pieces. Wrap in freezer wrap and freeze. Wahla - you have a chili brick.LOL

A good base for many styles of chili, and other chili mac, and casseroles.

No, I don’t think jerky is that expensive around here. Of course, the liquid has been dehydrated out of it, so the number of oz. is way less than the amount of meat you started with.

I have never eaten jerky any other way than just plain. All the old books talk about eating jerky with hardtack. I prefer home made jerky using ground beef, because it is easier to chew. I used to make it, and eat a slice with eggs as a substitute for sausage to lower the fat content of my breadfast.

I'm only going out in the garden to feed the birds as there is nothing to do until spring cleanup and there will be a lot of that to do. Weather service says we are well into a drought in most of California and especially the far NW corner where it seldom stops raining when it starts. Last drought was 76/77 when we were on water rationing for a summer and fall.

Now that’s just real pretty. I have a problem using up celery. I like a handful in soup, tuna salad and chicken salad.

But it doesn’t fit into my crisper drawer either, so it doesnt’ keep well. Now if I chopped off the bottom, it would fit in the crisper and last longer too.

Then I could have some additonal use from the stumps.

I think Texokie did something similar.

Seems to be ok. Didn’t get to do much - she tripped and fell on the steps, so we all insisted on a visit to hospital to check out her and the soon to be born baby boy.

Every one is OK. We’ll be checking in on her tomorrow, to see what we can do to help.

Haven't done much, but I'm starting to look through seed catalogs and dream. I need to do a seed inventory first, I've been known to order things I already had if I don't.

A word of warning: Don't order seeds through Amazon, unless it's from a company you know and trust!

I needed $5 more in order to get the free shipping, so I decided to browse their seed selection. Lots of cool-looking stuff! I ordered some black strawberry seeds, and some kiwi seeds. The strawberry seeds got here fine. The kiwi was seized by Customs. I got a very creepy letter letting me know that I was getting off with a warning because they were pretty sure I didn't know what was happening, but that they were going to be alert in case I tried it again. It seems the company I ordered from is in Taiwan, and they didn't have the documentation or quarantine procedures for importing plant materials into the US. I did manage to get a refund from the company, but I'm officially on a watch list now. (As opposed to before, when I was just thought I might be on a list.) That is the last time I ever order seeds from Amazon. There was nothing, absolutely nothing, hinting that the seller was not in the US.

After all that, I realized I had forgotten another source of seeds that I'd used before: GRIN the government seed bank! Possibly the only thing the government has ever done right, and I'm quite sure that's because most politicians don't know it exists. I browsed through and made a list of potential kiwi seeds to order, then added juneberries, seaberries, and other assorted fun stuff to the list. I'll wait until after I do an inventory before I order, just in case there's stuff I missed.

Heck, if I'm on a list already, I might as well get some seeds out of it!

That has been my adventure this week.

Are there other ways to eat beef jerky than straight out of the bag? (like heat it or combine it with something, etc.)

With homemade jerky, you can simmer it to make soup. But the stuff in the stores is treated with something that keeps it from rehydrating. I don't like the taste of store jerky, but my dad decided to experiment with it once. He had it soaking in hot water for 3 days and it never rehydrated!

Gee Whiz. Who knew that ordering from Amazon could get you on a list!

I had forgotten about the government seeds. Have fun ordering from them.

I too have to make lists, because, I have CPR (Can’t Possibly Remember).

Merry Christmas if I don’t get back on here. I am sitting up waiting on the gang from Ms. to get here. They are supposed to be about 25mi away now, so it’s getting a lot like Christmas now.

Cool picture! I had a lot of fun trying out the root powder! We don’t have much of a place in our house for plants, so I don’t try to maintain one indoors. But if I had a place for it, I surely would!

I use celery diced in most of my veggie sautee starts for soups and other dishes, but we seem to go in cycles. Sometimes we can’t keep it on hand, then other times I have to throw it away because it waited too long.

I also like to grab it for a quick snack. I always chop the stump off the celery before putting it into the fridge so I can get at it. It doesn’t fit well into my crisper either, so I usually place it against the side wall of the fridge and stack lettuce or other greens on top of it.

I use it for soup starter too. A handful of celery, carrot, and onions is the beginning of most all of the soups I make. However, with only 2 people, it takes forever to finish off the soup.

Now I can dehydrate it, but I still would need some fresh for tuna or chicken salad. I don’t like to eat it by the stalk, because it gets strings between my teeth.
