Has any FReepers completely ditched their cable or satellite provider and went exclusively with streaming services, such as Roku or Wi-Fi Blu-Ray?
I did. I had cable that I was paying upwards to $80 a month. I got rid of it and simply stream Netflix, HuluPlus, or Amazon Prime and saved over half.
So what did that do to your high-speed internet cost? Just curious given the bundling issues.
Can you get Discovery and their related channels like Learning on H or N?
It was actually cheaper getting the stand-only internet service (with the streaming channels) than having it bundled.
If you buy a Roku (a streaming device) it has Discovery plus at least over 20 other fee-for-service channels. And some of those channels are free.
We have “variable speed” internet. Fine for data, no good for streaming. Stuck with satellite.
What about Fox News and the Weather Channel? AMC?
Yes...but why stop there.
Not sure there is a movie, cable channel, TV Show, or sporting event that can’t be found if you know where to look on the net.
Just did this a couple months ago.
Cable/satellite TV is dead.
I have Netflix streaming. HD quality suffers and seems to even fade from none back to HD while watching the program.
If your using Netflix, use your PC, laptop, or tablet to build your cue as opposed to the Netflix menu on your TV screen. For some reason they limit your choice in all genres to 75, whereas online you get to see everything they have
Streaming Fox I’d.done through your cable Sat provider acct. Catch 22 and not very good.
Dirty little secret about comcast...they use the same wire to bring cable tv into your house as they do the internet. If you pay for internet, simply use a “Y” splitter on the wire just prior to your router-there are about 25 HD channels they can’t stop coming thru.
I get the minimum cable service, read books, and purchase some series that are worth watching on DVD.
When my husband died last year, I lost income, and had to cut. So did away with the cable and phone service, but kept the internet.
My son gave me an iTV box, and I love netflix. Love it - can watch seasons of shows I never saw, many of them excellent. No commercials!
That said, I think Roku has more channels, but iTV has plenty.
Another excellent source for stimulating content is YouTube, which is available on iTV (think it is on Roku also, but check.
Some of you Freepers might want to put “Mises Institute” in, and look for the hour long series on the economy. Will give you a whole different perspective.
Also, any really good interviews that appear on cable will show up on Youtube.
I put up an HDTV Antenna ($30 from Home Depot) and subscribe to Netflix and Hulu Plus. I pay $16/mo. for both NetFlix and Hulu.
My teenage sons found plenty that they liked on Netflix and Hulu and we don't miss Cable/Satellite at all.
I kept my Comcast high-speed internet (need that for Netflix and Roku) and can tell you I can receive absolutely ZERO HD channels via Comcast on any of my SmartTV's. Nothing. All the channels here have been moved up to a Digital tier which require their box to receive them. No two ways around that.
Do you use ROKU for Netflix?
If so, check out the PLEX app. It allows you to use your PC to stream to the ROKU box/TV. PLEX has some ‘channels’ that connect to TV so you can view many recent broadcast programs.
I catch Fox News on the internet. I don't have time to watch it anyway even when I had cable.
Did the same thing a year ago and haven’t missed satellite/cable at all. Bought a powered indoor TV antenna to get local digital channels. Bought Apple TV to stream Hulu Plus and Netflix. You can also stream Amazon through Roku or Wii.
You do need a good wireless router. I got the Apple Airport Extreme. So, yes, there was some money upfront to pay for these items, but got back all I paid in 3 months (was paying 75$ a month for DirectTV).
I get all my news online.
