Microsoft has announced the Surface Pro 2 as part of its New York tablet-centric press event.
According to the company, it is "faster than 95 per cent of laptops on the market today". Microsoft claims that it's actually a full PC in a tablet's body and the screen is 50 per cent more accurate in colour reproduction than the last model so can be used by design professionals more effectively.
The company claims that it performs 20 per cent faster, with a 50 per cent hike in graphical ability.
When coupled with a new Power Cover, the whole device gets two and a half times the amount of battery life than just the tablet alone, but that even is 60 per cent more efficient than the first-generation Surface Pro.
Other features include a fourth generation Intel Core i5 processor and the tablet will be offered in different configurations. The 64GB and 128GB models will come with 4GB of RAM, while the Pro 2s with storage space of 256GB or 512GB will sport 8GB of RAM. They will retail from $899 in the US, £719 in the UK and available in many countries around the world from 22 October. China will follow in November.

Microsoft dangled a $200 store credit to anyone who wanted to trade in an iPad for a Surface tablet. Now, the total has climbed to $350 via a new deal.
It’s not as simple as all that, however. Microsoft’s previous offer covered “gently used” iPad 2, 3, and 4s, which users had to simply tote into a Microsoft store and redeem, in a partnership with CExchange.
The speed enhancement depends on what you are measuring. The flash memory in the tablet should smoke most platter spinning hard drives, which are still about “95%” of he hard drives out there.

Any idea what the battery life on these things are?
And it will flop whle Apple will sell Millions within days of its next iPad upgrade.
The market for folks who want a MS computer in a 10” form factor is next to nil.
This is a nitch product at best, and honestly should not exist. If there is a demand, let hardware manufacturers build it. The fact MS built it themselves tells you all you need to know about what the market research says about this dog.
Yes, that’s what it looks like, but with improved features taking into account all the sneers and attacks against the previous version.
A LIVE demo is being done in NYC even as we speak...
Nice to know that Microsoft can’t afford to be as arrogant as it was...

I was doing some copy stuff over at the local Staples and browsing the tablets, saw the Surface Pro. Played with it, and its little flat keyboard. Nice; can see how it would be good on a flight.

When it works better thank 95%, call me.

Battery life, which was one of the main reasons we couldn’t recommend the original Surface Pro, is said to be 60 to 100 percent better, with anywhere between 8 to 10 hours of endurance, depending on what you are doing. Panay says that it is a combination of the the new Intel Haswell chip and other parts that were reconfigured to get the thicker and more powerful tablet running longer.
When I go to the “mall” which is about twice a year, the Apple store looks like they are giving away free beer, and the Microsoft kiosk guy is the loneliest fella in town.

The Haswell chips are amazing in terms of power consumption. The MacBook Air line (which is really what you should compare the Surface Pro to, not an iPad) saw some pretty hefty battery life boosts when they were updated earlier this year, so I’m not surprised to see a huge boost from the Surface, especially if they were doing other redesign to go with it, and switching from platter to SSD will help too.
how long would it take to write a novel on a touch screen?
