The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I forgot to say the hummingbirds are special as your pictures show. I need to get my feeder out there but I’m staying in to stay cool.

Thank you for the kind words. Just grabbed the only camera that had batteries and zoomed a bit so not to get close enough to scare them away from the window. I wish I knew something about photography instead of so much about nothing.

Excellent! I look forward to seeing your photographs when your son comes into town and you're sure right about the type size on the instructions; I usually give up and hand them to our daughter...
Ahh, you have a Yorkie (cute dogs!); great to hear she's functional too. :)
I have a question. You mentioned you put your walking onions in a container. What size and depth of a container, and what type of soil mix did you use? And has "The Marcella Food Container Company" previously planted and harvested the walking onions in this contained fashion? Intriguing...

I've always said, Men are good for lifting heavy objects and killing spiders.
Ruh-roh... Similarly, as Elaine said on a Seinfeld episode, "Well, the female body is a... work of art. The male body is utilitarian, it's for gettin' around, like a jeep."

mlizzy, I started trying to grow food plants about last March and knew nothing - never grew any kind of plant in my entire life. Since I don't know I can't do “x” in gardening, I do “x” and see what happens. I did listen to Johnny and greeneyes when I started and also started doing my own research.
When I found Egyptian Walking Onions, I wanted them as I would never be without onions. I am also a prepper and plan for emergencies so these onions fit my prepper style.
The onions will take over the land wherever you plant them as they do walk. I planted them in the wood planter so they would have to stay in the container and not take over the dirt garden. When they put out the walking part of the onion I will move it to stay within the planter as that walking part could go outside the planter and plant itself in the dirt garden. The planter is probably ten feet long and about 7-8 inches across and about 7 inches deep. I have it filled with Miracle Grow potting soil mix.

In thinking about refreshing the potting soil mix next spring, I'm getting “10 Lbs of Azomite - Organic Trace Mineral Soil Additive Fertilizer - 67 Trace Minerals”. It doesn't take much to add to a container.
Along with the Azomite, I'm getting 15 lbs. of earthworm castings to add some to every container.
Do I need something other than these two additives to refresh potting soil mix? If so, what? (I'm not adding untreated manure so don't even suggest it.) :o)

You're welcome... :)
This is only the second time in my life (and I'm in my 60s), that I've seen hummingbirds in nature... but, I was able to come within two feet of one particular visitor (to our marigold/geranium potted plant), and he didn't seem phased at all that I was standing there. My daughter took a picture but you really can't see it like you can on your cool photos... they are amazing creatures...

I really don't know about container plant soil. There are probably better people to ask.
But I know you can't go wrong with some well-aged horse poop.

I have 2 tomato plants. Dozens of blossoms. No tomatoes. What gives?

Tomatoes are fussy about the temperature at which they will "set" fruit. Yours may not like the nighttime temps, or the days may be too hot.
You can encourage fruit set by gently shaking the blossoms to encourage the transfer of pollen.

I’m referring you to greeneyes and ApplegateRanch for possible answers to your tomato problem.
Anyone else reading this who has a theory about his tomatoes, please post it.

I agree with Nepeta that gently shaking the plants will help set fruit... ALSO, you can place some mushroom compost (I put a hefty amount) around the base of the plant avoiding direct connect with the stems. Because I had the same issue as you with our Brandywine heirloom maters, and after following this advice (that I found online), we’ve had some 60 tomatoes since (and still counting)...

Can’t be the temps. I live amidst huge tomato fields. I’ll try the shaking. Thanks!

Does Jesus have a sense of humor? I ask because I've always loved lichens and mosses, but have never succeeded in "raising" either, however, I admit I didn't try
super hard as it's been said, they grow where they want to grow... But lo and behold, when we moved to our new pad Sept. 1 (which also was our wedding anniversary!) of this year, look at this fence? Makes me smile (and smile).

My secret. I pray when I plant seeds or transplant.
Heck, I give thanks every time I’m out in the garden.

Ain't it the truth? I find gardening therapeutic for that reason and am only posting today as it's [finally] raining and raining outside (thank G-d)...
