Free Republic | 9/6/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/06/2013 11:58:59 AM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Pickled banana peppers

yield - whatever you want
Wash your peppers and cut into rings. Pop out seeds and membrane. Put raw rings in canning jars, fill to the bottom of the neck, don't force pack too many in.
Make your brine. Increase proportions depending on how many peppers you have. I figure roughly 1 1/4 cup brine for each pint.
Bring to a simmer until all is dissolved -
1 cup white vinegar
2 cups water
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp mustard seed
When it simmers and all sugar is dissolved, pour brine into jars up to the bottom of the neck. Cover. Process pints 15 minutes, quarts 30 minutes.

No problem, enjoy. My favorite sandwich to eat these with. Get a roll of dough, the italian loaf from Pillsbury. Unroll so it’s a sheet. Layer with ham, salami, sliced thin onion, provolone cheese, light mayo and some pickled banana peppers. Dust with basil and oregano. Roll up, seal, dust with basil and oregano and oil the crust either by hand or spray. Bake on a cookie sheet for 30 minutes at 325 degrees. Let cool a bit before cutting. Great on a fall day, football food. Dang I’m hungry now and I am fasting today.

First is identifying them for future reference.

Second is getting the sunflowers harvested and threshed ASAP, while the losses are still minimal.

Third is “treat” the seeds with a week bleach or alcohol solution to kill any eggs on them prior to storage.

Fourth, give, as planned, the threshed-out heads to the chickens and let them deal with any bugs. I’ll store them in a tightly covered container to prevent escape while they’re being doled out.

The strange thing is, we’ve never seen these beetles before; and the native prairie sunflowers have never shown any signs of this type of attack. The eggs must have been in or on the seeds.

Here's a couple of pictures I found on the net, though no info. Anyone recognize these? This is what I'm beginning to have a probelm with.

Not much to report here. The ears of corn I harvested are drying in a basket, they’re very pretty! I’m picking beans here and there and letting those dry too. My first tomato cross is ripe, looking forward to seeing what grows out of the seeds from that.

I won’t get much done this week due to family stuff, but at least I can admire my corn, wild grape juice, and 10 pints of pickle relish

Sorry to hear about the illness and injury. I know in past years you have grown quite a variety of veggies.

In addition to ongoing health problems, I've had two successive injuries that have had me of of commission since early May. Just started to drive again yesterday. If I grow anything in the future, it will be in containers placed up where I can reach them. My hot peppers are in containers and when things went haywire, I was able to flip the plant up and examine the bottom of it's leafs and spray there easily.

From that angle, they look like Japanese beetles.

Just went out and looked - two tenths of an inch so far. You must be getting pounded over there to get that much.

If you have any food grade DE, take one of those bulb snot puller things you have if you have a baby and poof them with the DE. Maybe several times/day.

Especially if it’s hot, they’ll dehydrate and die.

I’m thinking about putting some of the more unusual pepper and tomato varieties in containers next year. Makes it easy to treat issues and they’re not being splashed by dirt and microbes every time it rains. And, it’s easier to keep them away from bunnies and bambis.

And pull them in the garage if we have unusually cool temps.

No surgeries yet. I’ve been told surgery on my foot is inevitable though. Bah. I dread that day.

Just went out and checked, we had over 5in In less than an hour. I was trapped in my truck, dead battery, halfway in the driveway, half in the street. LOL Carol bailed about halfway, I decided to ride it out, till nature called, got soaked coming in, rain ended 10 minutes later, wouldn’t ya know it. Just went out and jump started the truck and finally finished our trip. Happy anniversary to my wonderful wife, we have more fun together! :)

I’m glad you and your wife are happy together, what a wonderful life no matter what happens as you have each other. I know how that feels and miss it every day.

Five inches in less than an hour - amazing and you’re not many miles from me. I still have sprinkling rain so all the rain testifiers about how good rain is, can be happy my plants are getting rain and not water out of the hose.

Good luck and prayers if you need to have the foot cut.

My wife will continue to garden the ground, she can still reach it. It has drip irrigation on timers, and landscape fabric, so all she does is plant and pick. But I am looking to grow peppers and maters in containers next year, up where I can get to them. I will use a drip system also because I don't like to water with a hose, too much wasted water. I may try to prune them to keep them short and contained, but don't know if the will work or not, all I have to lose is a few seeds and I usually start way too many.

They don’t look familiar to me. Have you tried to google sunflower beetle pests or something?
