The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Well I was washing dishes, clearing tables, and frying hamburgers on the commercial grill at my parents bar and grill when I was about 6. Spent 10 years in a trailer with no dishwasher, and about 7 without a washer or dryer.
I got loads of sympathy for all sorts of stuff.LOL
Well, to put things in perspective, we had a wonderful year compared to last year with the drought. Of course, we had an even better year in 2010, which just goes to prove that all is relative I guess.LOL
Now washers and dryers, had them non-stop for the last 35yrs. Can't stand going to a laundromat.
I have two peppers growing on the plant that did not have any yet, and a new one on the producing plant. I have one hot pepper that I cant read its tag, but it is producing well. It seems like its name was Ring of fire or such. Gotten 4or5 6-7in hot peppers from it. You are welcome to one of those to see if you want to save seeds from it. It is container sized plant.
Our early Girl tomatos are still producing as strong as ever, which amazes me. They shoulda been done in June. We are getting a few BigBeef and something that I cant read it's tag. Our tray of mater cuttings we took 2 weeks ago are still hanging in there. I think when they get their roots established they will take off.
Drove into town today for the first time in a couple of weeks. It was not too painful, I could start it and shift without much trouble. Gunna take Carol to a nursery in Tomball for her anniversary gift tomorrow and my birthday lunch at Harris County BBQ.
“You are welcome to one of my ghost peppers. Just one would be last a lifetime :)”
While reading about peppers today, came across ghost peppers and I don’t want one. It’s the hottest pepper of all.
Read up on ‘Trinidad Moruga Scorpion’.
I have both.
I’m going to make my own ‘bunny off’ spray for next year if I can get them to ever make.
As it is, between us, we still listed less than half of the Bimbo brands.
Wheat, rye, barley breads, and more: I plant all three, but not oats. Just can’t do oats. I can’t get the timing right: either try to harvest too early; or miss them by waiting until they’ve already fallen out of the husk. Weeeeee! Back on-topic!
Thanks; checked it out, but ....
Last year was a corn bust due to extreme heat preventing pollination, but this year’s Serendipity corn is very good. I picked 2 ears this afternoon to have with dinner, and it was very good. Be glad when the rest matures; these two were the most advanced. Thanks for that seed, if you’re reading this, justadumbblonde!
Also this afternoon I harvested nearly all the rest of the black oilseed, as it was getting attacked. Only the ones that still had petals attached & no seed showing were left to mature more.
I thought it was birds, but in two of the flower heads I found a total of 3 large beetles chowing down on the seeds. About 3/4 inch long by 1/2 or more inch wide; a blocky rectangle, almost, but not quite, square body & heads. A flat dark brownish greenish, with a bit of darker irregular striping, like a camo pattern.
I also found one in a Russian sunflower head that was an early ripener.
Tomorrow is our local Rural Volunteer FD’s annual picnic, and our alphabet-group is assigned salads, so they’ll be getting cucumbers in raspberry vinaigrette from us. I’ve been wondering what we were going to do with all of them that are still out there. :-)
Yep, they’re weapons grade pepper. I like them for the novelty. You can’t eat them whole, Youtube is full of videos of people trying to do that. While we were out last evening, Carol bought me a mortar and pestle to grind them to flakes, where they can be utilized. This is my first time to have a crop of them, but I did try some flakes in some food last year. You just can’t use very much. For some reason, I like my sushi hot, as in very hot.
wife wanted to plant some bulbs around the base of a tree in our bird and squirrel feeding area. We have a tall container of red pepper that she put around the planting zone that kept them away.
What’s your plan for dealing with the beetles? Cukes and rasberry vinaigrette sounds great. Serendipity sounds like a good corn to try.
Oh yeh, agree totally about the laundromat. What a hassle.
Hubby likes to pile dishes up, and when there’s no more plates or silver ware, he might think about washing them. I like to wash them as I go, but when I get busy, they tend to just grow until I can’t get mine washed, and then one of us has to clean up the mess(usually me).
Hi Marcella - peppers, I LOVE sweet bananas, you can eat them chopped, only a little bite to them, pickle them, great on sandwiches, or saute ever so slightly in olive oil and then freeze in ziplocs. Great on a italian sausage sandwich or a pizza. Also grow cayennes when I do want some heat cayennes will give a slow heat not a burn. I just put them in a long twist tie string and dry them, great in chili and you can put some dried ones in a jar and cover with olive oil. Let sit out for a few days and then refrigerate, The oil will go reddish and a few drops of oil added to your saute pan are great. I also bought some red peppers at the store a few years ago called ancient sweets. I never had luck growing red bell peppers but the yield on the ancient sweets is great. That’s about it for the peppers I have.
PS on the peppers, I forgot I also grow jalapenos but the only thing I do with those is make poppers. Have made 4 batches so far this summer (4 cookie sheets full), probably will do one or 2 more before the plants die off.
I copied what you wrote about peppers. I have done that with all who wrote about peppers. I started reading/looking at peppers after I wrote that yesterday and there are so many it’s confusing.
What you all wrote let’s me know what works for you so I can use those as a guide. Sweet Banana peppers sounds like a good one.
**Buchanan Dam is at 35.02% full.
Mansfield Dam is at 31.56% full.**
Unfortunately, between sickness in the family this year and hurting my foot late in the spring there’s a lot I haven’t ‘grown’ this year. My superhots are in large pots on my driveway since I never got around to setting them out in the garden itself.
I’ve also got some of the dwarf tomatoes there too. Rosella Purple for one. It’s got blooms on it right now in fact. I’m going to try to overwinter the rest of my superhots in 6” pots in my garage under the lights. We’ll see how I make out with that.
Hopefully we can some sort of a fall garden started this weekend.
Let me know mif youn want my pickled banana pepper recipe (for canning)
I can spell just type crappy when in a hurry.
