What is the cheapest, most nutritious and bountiful food that has ever existed in human history Hint: It has 390 calories. It contains 23g, or half a daily serving, of protein, plus 7% of daily fiber, 20% of daily calcium and so on.
Also, you can get it in 14,000 locations in the US and it usually costs $1. Presenting one of the unsung wonders of modern life, the McDonalds McDouble cheeseburger.
The argument above was made by a commenter on the Freakonomics blog run by economics writer Stephen Dubner and professor Steven Leavitt, who co-wrote the million-selling books on the hidden side of everything.
Dubner mischievously built an episode of his highly amusing weekly podcast around the debate. Many huffy back-to-the-earth types wrote in to suggest the alternative meal of boiled lentils. Great idea. Now go open a restaurant called McBoiled Lentils and see how many customers line up.
But we all know fast food makes us fat, right? Not necessarily. People who eat out tend to eat less at home that day in partial compensation; the net gain, according to a 2008 study out of Berkeley and Northwestern, is only about 24 calories a day.
The outraged replies to the notion of McDouble supremacy if its not the cheapest, most nutritious and most bountiful food in human history, it has to be pretty close comes from the usual coalition of class snobs, locavore foodies and militant anti-corporate types. I say usual because these people are forever proclaiming their support for the poor and for higher minimum wages that would supposedly benefit McDonalds workers. But theyre completely heartless when it comes to the other side of the equation: cost.

Even better, you can buy it on near any country on the planet and it tastes pretty much the way it should.
Good to know! There is a Jack in the Box only a couple of blocks from where I live.
The thing that bothers me about McDonals (besides not offering 100% whole grain bread) is the french fries. They're a lot of calories without even the nutritional skin. McDonalds has the food technology so they could easily come up with a carrot or sweet potato option that people would like.
I have to say, I’m partial to the Filet-o-Fish sanguich. I have been eating at McDonalds since the early 60’s and, I have visited their establishment in nearly every state of the union. No matter where you go, you know EXACTLY what to expect, and, they deliver.
Further, considering the above, McDonalds’ offerings are, to me, ‘comfort food’. The Big Mac, is a complete meal: meat, vegetable, and starch, though I must confess, I toss the pickle. I don’t know who came up with the pickle as a garnish for meat, but should I ever meet that individual, Stand Your Ground will be invoked...
” animals wont eat it before you do.”
We had a boxer at the truck shop I worked at that would disagree.
My favorite driving snack used to be a McDonald regular burger and a large McDonald's coffee. Oh yeah!
I now eat breakfast at McDonalds, which is quite good, and the occasional Big Mac for nostalgia reasons.
It's not the best burger, but it's a good deal for the money.
I still won't eat at the Cheesecake Factory because it's just freakin' gay.
JitB is a mediocre to poor fast food place, in my experience.
In n Out is probably the best such chain. Till the bean-counting and franchising types get ahold of it anyway.
One of our good friend's daughter called that "Jack in the Crack", and her mom went ballistic.
Jack in the Box, two tacos for 99 cents.
I’ll McPass.
You beat me! I was just about to post that. I love ‘em.
And Big Macs as well.
Rumor has it that some stores will let you order it with lettuce and big mac sauce instead of ketchup and mustard
Yeah with the mystery meat paste.
Never had one long enough to test the decay time, but I can tell you that 3 dogs over 15 years all eagerly ate McD burgers and looked for more. 2 of them were also known to refuse most dog treats and the members of this breed are considered *frugal eaters*.
Maybe I’ll get to try it someday. I’ve only heard good things about it.
I eat the McDouble regularly. It’s a very good deal and i’m thankful McDonalds offers it. Funny just yesterday i tried something i’d read on Reddit where you get it “DLM” style (Dressed like a Big Mac). You get the BigMac sauce and shredded lettuce added and it’s pretty much a cheaper BigMac (different bread though). I forgot to ask to hold the mustard and ketchup so it was messy with all the sauce but, tasty. I bought (2) and paid $3 for both with the addons at my McDonalds.
wild animals.
6 oz. sirloin? What is that like three little bites?
The only time I ever went to Outback I left feeling completely ripped off.
