A Florida student found that the ice at fast food restaurants is actually dirtier than the toilet water at the same establishment.
The student, 12-year-old Jasmine Roberts, hypothesized that the ice at fast food joints was probably dirtier than the toilets.
So she went to five fast food restaurants and collected samples.
She ordered cups of ice and put them in sterile beakers. She also went into bathrooms, flushed the toilet once, and collected a sample.
The findings were pretty disturbing.

Ah, the joys of cross-contamination!
People forget cabinet doors, too.
I know folks who had spotless countertops, but their cabinet doors (inside and out, along the edges, where hands reach to open them) were crusty.
If you aren't giving those cabinet doors a thorough cleaning once a week, you're just spreading around the "germ" love.

Actually... in some cases, it's a local situation with birds, bacteria, and snails. Short cycle vector. I'm sort of a student of waterborne disease.
The military encouraged that.
I started every shift of my military kitchen service with 3 each 25 gallon pots of water that got heated to as close to 210F as altitude allowed.
Just in case power went out and I needed it. It was also darned handy for other uses.
One of the problems some folks don't realize is that the good old US of A is becoming 3rd world in some respects. We've got the 3rd worlders here. Facilities aren't as good as they were in the 70s/80s, and things like bedbugs and lice are on the rise right here in the US of A.

I have a 30 gallon stainless steel pot I got at WalMart for exactly that reason/use. Going through the line with it, the guy ahead of me says “That’s the biggest pot I ever saw!”
Never had to use it yet, but I got it if I need it.

Water is 8.6 lbs per gallon. Don't try to fill it and move it unless you have some BIG airmen assigned to KP.

And you know, of course, that the addition of a small amount of plain salt will raise the BP of water by a few degrees.
Doesn’t matter much at or near sea level, but for people in the Rockies or high desert areas, it’s good to know.

I have the formulas memorized. I did a reserve deployment to 8000 ASL during the middle of culinary school. School accepted the evaluation forms from the military for part of my
slave labor internship, and let me drop back a section when I came back.
I made bread, good bread, the first time, going from 769' ASL to angels 8, landlocked. You can't do that without knowing a few things. ;)

I used to watch Marv on Houston TV.
I don't think anyone quite forgave him for the Chicken Ranch expose... Lord knows there were enough whore houses in the area, like the one in the motel, run by a sheriff of a local county.

I'm just a cook, last time through. I don't fly and I don't fight (not where Top can find out). I just supported those that do.

Commercial ice machines are bacteria breeding ground - and salmonella is a surprisingly common bacteria that sets up colonies. Yep. I watch the shows Kitchen Nightmares and Restaurant Impossible. Its disgusting what is found in some restaurant kitchens, ice machines being one of the most disgusting. Its not just the ice bins but the parts of the machine were the ice is made that is often the problem.

I’m not at all sure what a *health inspector* is supposed to look for; wouldn’t a ice machine inspection be routine?
