Student Compares Toilet Water To Ice At Fast Food Joints, With Disturbing Results

A Florida student found that the ice at fast food restaurants is actually dirtier than the toilet water at the same establishment.

The student, 12-year-old Jasmine Roberts, hypothesized that the ice at fast food joints was probably dirtier than the toilets.

So she went to five fast food restaurants and collected samples.

She ordered cups of ice and put them in sterile beakers. She also went into bathrooms, flushed the toilet once, and collected a sample.

The findings were pretty disturbing.

“The article can be quite misleading because the relevant issue is often not the quantity of bacteria but rather the type, and I strongly suspect toilets are more likely to be harboring pathogens.”...You are right.. A friend who works on ice machines for a living confirms that many ice machines are not regularly cleaned but the germs would be vastly different. Plus he says this story is recycled, that every few years this story is revived but the ‘student’ is never named. Personally he said he never orders iced drinks in any place that has a bakery or pizza because it’s the yeast in the air that causes the ugly growth in the ice machines...

Standard home icemakers make ice up top and dump into a bucket underneath.

The icemaker itself, if not fondled by humans or roaches, should be fine.

The bucket, however... minimum, once a week, unless your troops are disciplined enough to ONLY use the door mech and never stick their filthy mitts in the bucket to get ice.

Use bleach.

I notice I've gotten pissier about this since I lost my spleen and have a compromised immune system. ;)

The student was named in this story. But you are quite right the story pops up every few years.

I don't have to do either, thankyouverymuch.

I say that as someone that has been in kitchens all over the world with my Uncle and run kitchens here in the US, military and civilian.

I just put in a new toilet. No where did it recommend that the toilet be cleaned periodically. But I knows how anyways.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR TOILET: INSTRUCTIONS

1. Put the lid of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid.

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a “power-wash” and rinse.”

6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the house, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Not sure how well this would work with an ice machine.

I hope you have your will drawn up..............sorry I didn’t mean to be rude. Is it too late to gargle with something?...I’d recommend single malt Scotch. Don’t make me do it for you! >:-P

This reminds me of my mom and dad....they were thrifty Yankees ...and on the rare occasion they went to a fast-food place they had the habit of *not* getting ice in their soft drink...b/c that would eventually water it down, as the ice melted.

Maybe they knew something...and didn’t tell me. [I always suspected they liked my brother better than me.]

Can’t be too bad!

Years ago when I was changing a transmission and drinking beer a “friend” of mine while I was under the car filled my quart bottle of beer with used “recycled” beer and didn’t say a thing until I drank the whole thing.

It didn’t hurt me one bit!

Dog drinks out of the toilet bowl all the time ....so does that mean his mouth is cleaner than my ice cubes? EWWWWWWW!

If you worry about things like this you would probably be better off not eating in a fast food joint in the first place.

I'm not buying this story. Every ice machine I've ever seen in today's restaurants have filters.
Not having a filter makes their specialty drinks taste bad and they put tens of thousands
of dollars into researching those recipes.

Sorry, but I have to call BS. Probably a Food Nazi who agrees with Bloomberg.

Dog drinks out of the toilet bowl all the time ....so does that mean I've given bigheadfred enough info to run through my life like a bull through a china shop?

YES! Yes it does!

Good point - the second scariest thing are shoelaces... I worry that they touched the floor in a bathroom.

Most bacteria don’t like an acidic environment. Diet Coke, with a ph of 3.39, ought to be pretty safe, even with questionable ice.
