The pre-dawn phenomenon, which looks like a huge bubble expanding and then popping, was recorded June 22 by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the Subaru Telescope.
Since then, speculation has run rampant about the source of the early morning flash.
Ichi Tanaka, a support astronomer at Subaru Telescope, describes it as "a huge halo of light above the eastern horizon," adding, "It was slowly expanding to over 45 degrees in five minutes or more."

Speculation is that the bubble was a shock wave as the missile flew through the upper atmosphere. Or maybe it was fuel expanding in space from the separation of the third stage.
Or, as a blogger from Discover Magazine lightly proposed, it could be a wormhole from the Pegasus Galaxy.

That’s just stupid.
I’m thinking Andromeda. They are the only ones that really care.

Explosion of an ice chunk in the upper atmosphere? This has happened in the past with enough energy to make people think a nuke had been popped.

That sounds like a plausible explanation or it could be atmospheric sprites.

If we go with the MMIII, RV theory, I would postulate the following:
Frequently 1 of the RV has a spotting charge, which is just HE to simulate the completing of the detonation sequence.
The variables in the atmosphere, combined with time of day and camera angle, could produce the effect.
There are similar atmospheric phenomenon that occur on launch, during just the right conditions.

I once saw something that looked like a huge bubble or halo expand through the upper atmosphere directly overhead, in Los Angeles. This was around 1986 or so. It happened around midday.
Never figured out what it was, and never saw a news report about it, but it was spectacular.
