Memorable World Series. That hit gave Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead but what was important is that Boog Powell of Baltimore cut off the relay throw from the outfielder. It would have been a close play at home plate. That was the only game the visiting team won.

I remember watching that WS win in Chautauqua, NY.

Back when PGH had a major league team.

I can remember many players from that team, but not this guy. I guess I was just too young.

He was one of those reliable backups. His batting average would make him a starter on today’s team.

Pittsburgh beat Baltimore in 7 games. I remember listening to the last game of the series on the radio.

As an 11 year-old Pirates fan, this was one of the highlights of the year. Watched every minute of every game.

RIP Jose.

The only thing I remember about the ‘71 World Series was that after the game they trashed the city. I was 8 years old at the time and could not understand why.

I remember that year and the great players the Bucs had. I have Jose's autograph on a ball with Gene Alley, Al McBean, and few others from the late 1960's. Sorry to see him go.

The Pirates have always gone through cycles of long stretches of lean years with a few successful ones. I hope this season marks the end of our current nightmare.

I remember that Topps card

Willie Stargell was on this team. Bill Mazeroski and Roberto Clemente played in 1971, they also played in 1960 when the Pirates beat the Yankees in the Series. Clemente was Series MVP in 71. Clemente died in 1972 in a plane crash.

Went to a ton of weekend games at Connie Mack with Dad from about '63 to '73, as a kid I never realized what I was seeing with these guys and players like Koufax, Aaron, Bob Gibson, Willie Mays and tons of others. Even got to see Stan the Man in his final series at Connie Mack.

That was the end of baseball’s golden era. I saw a lot of games at old Forbes Field. I finally got to Bradenton this year to see the Bucs in Spring Training, something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid.

We might have been schoolmates. :) I was a 12 year old Pirate fan. We lived in Brookline.

I was the biggest Willie Stargell fan ever. I miss Pops, and Chicken On The Hill. We used to go to Forbes Field and sit out in the left field bleachers. I think the tickets were a buck.

If I wasn’t at the game I was listening to the radio or watching it on TV. My friends and I collected baseball cards, and “flipped” them, which was a game of physical skill where you could win or lose cards.

My mother and I (both Delaware Valley born and bred) are Phillies phans, but we rooted for the Bucs in the '71 WS because mgr. Danny Murtaugh's mother babysat my mother when the latter was little, back in Chester, PA. Murtaugh was a native of Marcus Hook, PA.

RIP Jose, Danny, Roberto, and Pops.
