Weekly Gardening Thread – 2011 (Vol. 09) March 04
Free Republic | 03-04-2011 | Red_Devil 232

Good morning gardeners. It is finally March and in Central Mississippi it has come in like a Lamb so far, does that mean it will go out like a Lion?

People used to believe that bad spirits could affect the weather adversely, so they were cautious as to what they did or did not do in certain situations. Those beliefs often included ideas that there should be a balance in weather and life. So, if a month came in bad (like a lion), it should go out good and calm (like a lamb).

I am still waiting for my tomato seeds to germinate. I am not worried about them yet as they take 14 – 21 days. A couple of my squash seeds have sprouted. Time to get the garden ready and my soil tested. The testing only costs $6.00 at the county extension. Regular tests include: pH, Lime Requirement, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, and Sodium.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

Somebody posted a new way to do this. We’re assuming you’re meaning the vegetable and not the decorative vine.

Yes, I want to grow the vegetable. My soil is Miserable Clay, so I want to grow in a container.

I can’t grow Sweet Potatoes here on Humboldt Bay as our temps are too cool and I think I read that they require a 120 day season. My mother grew them in the ground in Fresno County Ca, the Gateway to Hades...

Didn’t somebody develop a new way to container yams recently?

How large of a container do I need to grow sweet potatoes?

We used to plant sweet potatoes on a terrace in our field. The vines grow exceptionally long. I mean, 25-30 feet if they are in good soil. I know you can grow regular potatoes in a 5 gallon bucket, but I'd be hesitant to try that on the sweets.

How tall do the bushes get?

Mine is 12 - 18 inches tall, but it also has new growth on it. I expect it to grow taller this year.

You may also want to consider rosemary. My rosemary plant is 3 ft tall, and they can grow a lot taller. My neighbors have had honeybees all over their rosenary flowers. It's also one of those you can plant and, except for trimming, you can forget. Very low maintenance in the Hill Country.

Last year, I planted several extra sweet potatoes in large 16 inch pots. They didn’t do so well. But the 3’x5’ double raised bed worked great. Two levels made with 2x8 lumber, so about 15 inches of soil.

I planted in the raised bed on 15 inch centers, so I thought the 16 inch pots would work. But they didn’t. Great vines and all, but very small if any sweet potatoes.

*Rant On*

It wasn’t me! Up here on The Frozen Tundra you gotta get slips early, bury them in warm soil, weather permitting. Top with black plastic and lots of straw.

You know - there’s a REASON that certain things grow in certain climates! It is what it is...and the NORTH is NOT KNOWN for growing Sweet Potatoes or YAMS for that matter! (ALL potatoes come from freakin’ PERU! You do the longitude and lattitude calculations!)

Regular potatoes? Onions? Cranberries? Carrots? Beef & Dairy products that would bring you to your KNEES? Sure! Wisconsin can do that!

But, no. Everyone wants to grow whatever they CAN’T grow in their area just to prove that they can! (And they can’t!) And if there is ONE seed box empty on my ‘Wall-O-Seeds’ of the 60,000 things I offer - the customer wants the ONE box that is EMPTY! Grrr! Such is Human Nature...

Enjoy the seasons! Enjoy the produce that grows NEAR YOU IN season. Eat seasonally and locally and you CAN’T Go wrong.

And if you can’t? Gather up your stuff and MOVE nearer the foods that you just can’t LIVE without! :)

Papaya obsessed? Well, you’re NOT going to find it here in Wisconsin, LOL! Move.

*Rant Off*

No! I wish I had a slow day! I’m already into overtime. Grrrr! This is going to be one hellacious spring season between medical issues (of others) and being short staffed and customers needing more and more information for the simplest of things...

Everyone and their brother wants to grow their own food now, but of course, they don’t want to actually learn HOW to do it on their own, LOL! That ‘instant gratification’ cr@p applies to very few things in the area of food production. :)

Do I plant my Radish seeds with the pointy thing up or the pointy thing down?

Everyone wants to grow whatever they CAN’T grow in their area just to prove that they can!

Is that like growing papaya in the Texas Hill Country? People look at my papaya's and tell me that I can't grow them in Texas. My retort is, "Why, is it illegal?"

Back around Christmas time H.E.B. had rosemary trees in various sizes, from about 6in to 2ft, at reasonable prices. They were in Christmas tree shape and really looked good. I regret not buying one for my wife. Now she is wanting to plant rosemary and other herbs after seeing my veggie sprouts and garden plot.

Fresno County Ca, the Gateway to Hades...

[clearing throat] Be careful what you say about the land of my birth...

Snowing here -- again. Daughter reports from the Albany area of NY that they've had more than 90 inches of snow this year. Grandson asks why they live there. Job is the answer his mother supplies. Grandson asks, "Were there no jobs in Albany, Georgia?" Children have smart mouths at 18.

At least 3 inches since I got up this morning...2 doctors’ appointments, Ash Wednesday, computer consultant coming in today. Don’t know how I’ll make it. Might as well crawl back into bed.

People do that up here with figs. They are OBSESSED. Too much work, IMHO. What I would love of my own would be an avacado tree. THAT would be heavenly! :)
