"I've been in law enforcement 20 years, and this is the first time I've known of anyone that has busted a dog out of jail," Chancellor told The Oklahoman.

Fry spent several days in jail, and faces a municipal charge of allowing an animal to run at-large.

Fry didn't deny the charges. He told The Oklahoman that he warned police to stay away from his dog unless they wanted to face his shotgun.

As for Buddy Tough, he was euthanized while Fry was in jail.

I hope there was a lot more to this story than what is written in the article. I started reading the article as a humorous read, but sadness crept in at the end.

WTH?! They killed the dog while he was in jail? I hope there's more to this story then what was written. This doesn't make sense.

The end was devistating. That dog was the companion of a 73 yr old man. I can’t believe they did that!

There must be a lot more than what is written here. I will research and see if I can find a few more details.

He apparently took an animal that was impounded without paying the fine. After he was arrested, I'm sure the animal was returned to the pound and was euthanized after a certain period, which is typical pound practice.

I'm sure this was a devastating blow for an elderly man who implicitly had no other friends or any unestranged family.

I can’t either. Why would they do that?

It said there had been numerous complaints in the past and the dog had been in the pound before, also, that Mr. Fry had the option of simply picking his dog up from the pound and dealing with the fine in court.

But no, he had to pull this ridiculous stunt. From the mention of his shotgun I’m assuming he was waving a loaded gun around while he was doing it.

It’s just possible this dog was terrorizing the neighborhood and he did nothing about it. If the dog had mauled a kid would we be waxing sentimental and singing “Old Dog Tray” here?

Killing dogs is what police specialize in nowadays.

What happens to dogs that are confiscated for cause and put in county pounds? If no one pays the fine, they are usually euthanized after a few days. I don’t know of any state facilities that keep animals indefinitely.

On one hand, I've always been an advocate of keeping your dogs in check, just like you would your three year old. I live in an area where I see too many dogs running loose on rural county roads, and then see them again three days later, legs-up and bloated, because some twin-digit IQ, Doritos-and-beer-for-dinner slope head thinks owning a dog is like letting wild game hens run loose in the yard. (I have another story about that, but not now. LOL) Having said that, unless there was some public-menace aspect to putting the needle to the dog (I mean, poodles can be nasty little buggers for their size, but WTF?), some guerrilla warfare way well have ensued after the fact.

I won't incriminate myself any further for actions I may have taken in the past in that regard.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

The dog had a owner and should have been kept alive.

Morons!

Plenty of dogs have owners and are abandoned at pounds when they are picked up. I would guess that the majority of dogs euthanized at state facilities have owners who did not show up to get them back.

it's not really the pound's job to read the owner's mind.

Mr. Fry seems like a first class jerk. Threatening to murder people because he couldn’t handle his own business? Guy’s a sociopath. Poor dog.

This was a situation where it was known the owner was intent to get the dog back, not a deserted animal.

It should be pounds responsibility to make sure the dog isn't wanted.

Certainly sounds like a mental case, or just age related problems, but in either case this may be what it takes to push him over the edge.

It appears that they deviated from policy in this case. SOP is to send the cops out to gun down the dog in front of the owner.

Well considering they had the dogs owner hauled off to jail for breaking the dog out of the pound, someone with half a brain might have stopped to think hmmmm wonder if the old man is still in jail. I HATE kill shelters, thank GOD we do not have a kill shelter here and our town supports our humane society, Today at Home Depot a couple had the nicest, best behaved 9-month old Bichon-poodle cross that the original owner adopted at 10 weeks with his sister and then didn’t want him and took him to the pound, where this couple fostered and then fell in love and adopted him... nice, nice dog...... my bet is he got the better end of the deal if the owner wasn’t willing to even give him a chance as a tiny puppy before dumping him at the pound, I can imagine how his sister is being treated by that lady.

In this case it was not known when or if the owner would be out of prison to care for the animal. He should have made provisions to pay the fine and to have the dog put in a kennel at his own expense if he wanted to keep it.

The suggestion that the pound has a responsibility to ascertain if a dog is wanted is laughable. How many millions of taxpayer money should be spent on a federal animal detective force to track down the legal owners of every stray animal? Should the pound have tracked down Mr. Fry in stir and sent a counselor to discuss his future intentions?

If he wanted the dog he would have called a kennel and paid to have his dog taken care of while he was away. That's what a normal dog owner who loved his dog would do.
