I hope there was a lot more to this story than what is written in the article. I started reading the article as a humorous read, but sadness crept in at the end.

WTH?! They killed the dog while he was in jail? I hope there's more to this story then what was written. This doesn't make sense.

The end was devistating. That dog was the companion of a 73 yr old man. I can’t believe they did that!

It said there had been numerous complaints in the past and the dog had been in the pound before, also, that Mr. Fry had the option of simply picking his dog up from the pound and dealing with the fine in court.
But no, he had to pull this ridiculous stunt. From the mention of his shotgun I’m assuming he was waving a loaded gun around while he was doing it.
It’s just possible this dog was terrorizing the neighborhood and he did nothing about it. If the dog had mauled a kid would we be waxing sentimental and singing “Old Dog Tray” here?

On one hand, I've always been an advocate of keeping your dogs in check, just like you would your three year old. I live in an area where I see too many dogs running loose on rural county roads, and then see them again three days later, legs-up and bloated, because some twin-digit IQ, Doritos-and-beer-for-dinner slope head thinks owning a dog is like letting wild game hens run loose in the yard. (I have another story about that, but not now. LOL) Having said that, unless there was some public-menace aspect to putting the needle to the dog (I mean, poodles can be nasty little buggers for their size, but WTF?), some guerrilla warfare way well have ensued after the fact.
I won't incriminate myself any further for actions I may have taken in the past in that regard.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

The dog had a owner and should have been kept alive.

Better article about this:

HYDRO, Okla. An elderly Hydro man landed in jail after springing his prized pooch from the town kennel. Instead of paying a $100 fine for not having his poodle on a leash, 73-year-old Edwin Fry decided to bust Buddy Tough out, driving his lawnmower to the city pound Oct. 13 and breaking into the cage with bolt cutters.
As the pair escaped, police officer Chris Chancellor intercepted them.
Chancellor told The Oklahoman officers had received numerous complaints about Buddy Tough, who had been in the pound before. He said Fry had been told he could retrieve the dog and sort out the fine in court.
“I’ve been in law enforcement 20 years, and this is the first time I’ve known of anyone that has busted a dog out of jail,” Chancellor told The Oklahoman.
Fry spent several days in jail, and faces a municipal charge of allowing an animal to run at-large.
Fry didn’t deny the charges. He told The Oklahoman that he warned police to stay away from his dog unless they wanted to face his shotgun.

Regardless of the sad angle of the story, this guy doesn't sound like he is firing on all cylinders. His family or the authorities might be wise to get a mental health evaluation on him. It sounds based on previous actions, he may very well seek revenge by going after the pound or police with his shotgun.

The guy has some problems but why take it out on his dog? What the hell, really? The fact is the dog did not have to be put down while the guy was in jail. Being crotchety and even doing the stupid thing he did doesn’t mean authorities ought to kill his dog while the guy is locked up and can’t even attempt to make things right to avoid the dog dying.
