Are you truly independent? Do you have the skills? Can you hunt, grow a garden, can food, sew-knit, live off the land? Are you ready? Do you possess the "lost" skills? Our family is ready. In obama's words, "bring it on". Once the economy collapses, I'll be here longer than the liberals and their pampered lives.
Thanks everyone for sharing!
Many hybrid seeds will produce veggies quite sell the first year.
But if you save the seeds from that season, they are pretty much sterile, and will not germinate.
Year over Year, I save the seeds from my garden and use the ones that produce the best for the next year.
I got cabbage seeds up the rear! And they are like 90-95% germinating!
You just have to know what grows best and yields best where you are, but if you can go with heirloom type varieties, you’re better off.
You know what? I just tried those myself indoors because I don’t live where I can plant outdoors. I just kept a uv light on them, like the rest of my indoor growing veggies.
....but don’t forget the fertilizer.
Thanks. I will read this.
How about tampons? Excellent to use for gun shot wounds.
I visited a family in a city who had a composting toilet setup. In the bathroom in the house they had a 5 gallon bucket with a toilet lid on it. I prefer a wooden box with a toilet seat, and you slide the bucket in. You put something on the bottom of the buck - leaves, leaf mould, sawdust from raw wood (NOT kiln dried lumber, the microrbes that eat poop are dead), even normal dirt - a layer. Then every time someone uses the bucket, they sprinkle a handful of whatever on the product, and when full, take outside (or if you have room you can build a s***ting parlor shed outside).
It’s a good idea to have a few buckets, because if each bucket sits for a while it starts composting in the bucket, put the lid on but not tight, leave a crack for air.
A compost bin can be made from any kind of lumber hanging around, pallets if available and chicken wire. About 4 or 5 feet tall. Pile of compost material next to it. Dump bucket into compost pile, shovel some more composting matieral on it, and walk off.
No smell at all, composts in a couple of months, can be used on fruit trees or if no one has hepatits or parasites, even on food crops.
The main thing is to have plenty of composting material on hand. If you have acrege it’s easy to scavange. The family I visited got the city to dump chipper shredded stuff on their driveway periodically. Works just fine.
I have just purchased 2 and am going to give ‘em a try. My neighbor grew some beautiful juicy fat tomatoes and peppers in hers. I was impressed enough to purchase a couple at CVS.

yeah I heard the little OB ones are the best??
Heck - I’ll ride with you!
But accepting that there are no guarantees, and that no matter what you do it is possible to come up with a scenario where you lose anyway, I think it is worthwhile to do whatever one can to prepare. At least you won't die immediately from total stupidity (lack of preparedness).
Step one is to get in the best physical shape possible. For me that means losing weight I don't need and seriously working out to be in the best shape I can be if I need to suddenly work a lot harder to survive than I normally do in an average day.
Weapons and ammo are neat to have, but there is the matter of fire and maneuver in actual real life violent encounters. I don't think it is a good idea to be a stationary target, and running around with the weapons and associated ammo and whatever else you need in the way of water, food, medical supplies, poncho, etc is going to be a bit taxing if one is not prepared.
Also a certain mindset.
Hate to say it, but I stopped talking about preparing / survival to people who were buying up guns and ammo (thank you President Obama - gun salesman of the year for 2008 and 2009) when they were saying that their survival plans were to come stay with me...
Which is just what I don't need, unprepared armed people with an entitlement attitude showing up at my door who won't buy needed supplies now when they are (relatively) cheap who think all they have to do to be a part of a survival group is to show up with a gun and ammo and the attitude that that they being a person who is armed and (supposedly) able to shoot at attackers is enough to earn them a place of trust and respect with me in a high stress survival situation.
Which brings me back to mindset.
I can see that under certain circumstances things are going to get nasty in a big way... In a serious survival situation, I can see where I would feel like Duke Nukem - I came here to chew bubble gum and kick a@@, and I'm fresh out of bubble gum. Unprepared armed freeloaders being first on the list...
Aside from all that, I am just doing the same as the run-up to Y2K. Buying extra canned food, bottled water, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and liquid soap, stove fuel, stocking up on prescription meds, all the needed stuff to get through as long as possible.
Things could still get very rough over any length of time, but at least having enough for some length of time buys you that amount of time...
I’ve been wanting to grow tomatoes and peppers indoors, but don’t know what light setup to use, can you offer any advice? I rent, and don’t have any outdoor area (my balcony faces North).
Heh lol! You gotta be kidding me?
>>How about Iosat Potassium Iodine Tablets? (for a dirty bomb)
(Potassium Iodide For You)
If you had adequate light — natural, artificial, or a combination of the two — I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.
My neighbor just hung hers in front of a window and let natural sun do it. I don’t really know indoor lighting thought, so will be reading other answers with interest.
I LOVE your signature quote behind your screen name! :-)
Thanks.....going back, I see I misspelled it.
Yes, but if they just say that they plan to come stay with you and continue to go about their business, then what?
Those who think they will fend off everyone will have to bury all the bodies, burn them, or deal with the stench, disease, and rodents/carnivores. Its a thought I think a lot never think about. I wouldnt want to either.
Places that have ongoing civil wars (Bosnia, etc.) have similar situations with dead bodies. Not pretty as I understand it. (I have no first person experience in a war zone).
To All: Is there a survivalist ping list? If so, please add my name!
