Submitted by LiveScience Staff This video (scroll down) is making the rounds the past week on respected science sites like New Scientist as well as geek blogs and YouTube. It's based on not-brand-new research that involved a video that is said to be of interest to scientists who study these things and, perhaps, to anyone in the general public interested in sexual anatomy. Dr. Pek Van Andel and colleagues, in 1999, made the first MRI images of male and female sex organs while couples were having sex under, as it was put, cloistered conditions. MRI machines are said by some to be much like coffins. The purpose of the "observational study," as explained in the British Medical Journal in 1999: "To find out whether taking images of the male and female genitals during coitus is feasible and to find out whether former and current ideas about the anatomy during sexual intercourse and during female sexual arousal are based on assumptions or on facts." In all, 13 experiments were performed with eight couples and three single women. The results, as stated in the journal: "The images obtained showed that during intercourse in the "missionary position" the penis has the shape of a boomerang and 1/3 of its length consists of the root of the penis. During female sexual arousal without intercourse the uterus was raised and the anterior vaginal wall lengthened. The size of the uterus did not increase during sexual arousal." ......

I will never know. Ive had Cat Scans, and various other scans but have a pacemaker, so no MRIs.

Yes - stay clear of MRIs with the pacemaker! They are like a long tube, & it is quite tight fitting. The first time I tried to go into one was not a good experience. I didn’t even get 1/2 way in & I started pushing the help button. Now, when I get one, I request the open MRI because its only about 2 ft of tube & huge inside. A lot of times if you tell your doctor that you’re claustrophobic, insurance companies will allow you to go where they offer the open MRI.
When they got the first MRI machine in this area there were articles emphasizing how much lead and concrete was in the building, so cars wouldn’t be pulled off the highway! No fun for somebody with built-in electronics.
OMG! No, I guess not! You are ok in the CT Scans right?
“to find out whether former and current ideas about the anatomy during sexual intercourse and during female sexual arousal are based on assumptions or on facts.”

Has Captain Obvious left the building yet??
CT Scans are fancy x-ray machines. PET Scans are also OK, although I’ve not had one. MRI’s use powerful magnetic fields, a definite no-no if you have metal in your body.
The last time I had an MRI
it undid my zipper,
now I know why......
I can’t even tolerate an MRI by myself. I can’t imagine having sex in an MRI machine. Were the subjects midgets?
And in other news Van Jones resigned..
It’s an MRI. It’s a slice through the relevant parts.
Yes, magnetic resonance imaging! Hopefully the kind of scans that you can get safely are enough to detect anything wrong.
Has anyone asked this yet? Don’t most people reveal their organs during sex?
MRI = TMI
Hopefully. The doctors have said that if I could have an MRI I would have been given one.
Well, the point is that with a pacemaker, you can not go near the magnetic fields of the machine...but, have they opted for any kind of scope exploratory, ie for valves, vessels, organs, etc?
Science!
They probably had a grad student take care of that.
I’m thinking about the applications of nuclear medicine...
Very snugly.
