Good morning Freeper gardeners. This weekend marks the end of May and I hope everyones gardens are doing well. I know some have had to delay planting due to weather and we all hope conditions have improved for you.
So far this weekend is looking like a good one, weather wise, all across the Nation except for some lingering rain in the extreme NE. Lets get gardening!
Hostas...
funny stuff.
I love ‘em. I miss them, being in the desert. No chance here. Can’t get them to grow more than 3 months. But funny story here.
When I was in Ohio and married, I had 2.5 acres. Tons of plants. One day, my ex found this invoice on the kitchen table from Shady Oaks for $ 15.00.
He demanded to know what it was for. I kindly escorted him to a spot under a maple tree and there it stood...my $15 plant.
Hosta, “Masquerade” standing proudly. All ONE inch tall of it.
LOL It’s a miniature hosta!
He said “You mean I paid $ 15 for that one inch tall plant?”
Needless to say, I’m divorced from him. My present sweetie would understand completely.
:) *big grin*
tomatoes are dormant above 86 degrees? Wow. I didn’t know that - all types of tomatoes? Here in Nashville, Tn it is above 86 most of the time in summer.
I've switched to a mix of 10-10-10 and bone meal. Makes it about a 12-19-10 overall. Mix it into the soil when planting and also side-dress every 3-4 weeks. The only thing I use my remaining Miracle Grow for is the corn, corn needs a lot of nitrogen.
Hey, neighbor!
Sevin works on cabbage loopers in your area? The only thing that works here is Dipel. There used to be huge fields of cabbage and potatoes here and most insects are immune to sevin. And your lettuce is still going? Mine went to seed about 3 weeks ago and I fed it to the chickens. They really enjoyed it!
Noting your location, most bulb type plants need to be planted in the fall. I plant shallots in late fall and have the fresh “onions” all during the winter. I remember having garlic on the farm, but we always planted them in late fall too.
You may want to use them if they are still firm and start some late in the fall. I tried to plant some garlic during the summer season and it all rotted before sprouting.
Hug your kids in the morning
Thump your tomatoes in the afternoon
I'd better stop there while I am ahead
So you traded hubby for Masquerade? Sounds like a good call!
Lady, I consider that a huge compliment. I gather you are a trained professional.
My employer replaced all of who know “stuff” with high school kids in January. Got rid of everyone who knew the science of their job, because they made too much money. They did it through all 13 stores, a complete brain drain.
My customers are mad. How do I know this? I gave them my phone number so if they had problems we could work it out. On my own time.
When I move to Texas, I will start my own business.
*That’s the reason I am a late freeper. I spent hours each night after work helping customers while on my own time!*
After 5 days of rain I have to mow the yard just as soon as the dew dries. I will collect some of the clippings for my compost pile.
Get all my tomato plants staked. They needed done last week but there was a rain delay.
Add green to my compost pile and turn it.
Give the dogs a bath!
Hey, Di!
Have to laugh at you planting sweet autumn clematis! It’s a weed here, literally. But beautiful in the fall when the woods are full of it.
White cedar here is a type of cypress that gets about 90 feet tall!
Can’t get nasturtiums to grow here—too hot. :(
Have fun!
Signs? Signs? What are those? You mean those big white squares with letters on them? The ones that say herbs, or hanging baskets, the ones that have the prices on them?
My favorite question by far is, when someone actually bothers to read a sign that says 4-packs are $1.25, how many plants are in a 4-pack? LOLOLOL
LOL
They don’t read signs.
They don’t read the growing instructions.
They don’t understand the science.
We’re paying the price of our crappy educational system!
Sing it, girl!!! Amen
*clapping wildly*
That said, I really liked my customers. LOL
I love fuchsia's, but have the hardest time with them. I hang em and that signals the “death warrant” Finally got PO'D (put out) with them one year I yanked all 10, 20 dollar basket's down and threw them out in the wooded corner of the lot. Sure enough, 3 weeks later of total neglect they were thriving where I discarded them.
But ... as a MG I learned .... I just buy fuchsia's now and throw them out immediately to the wooded area. I may be slow but I'm stoopid ....grinning
I hear ya. We have no internet at work, and no e-mail. I do quotes for landscapers after hours, too. However, I find ways to pad my paycheck to make sure my time is compensated. I don’t ‘work for free’ for an employer, away from home. ;)
I’ll have my own business in the near future, too. There’s a real dearth of knowledge out there, and a big niche to fill concerning home gardeners and those that need advice on ‘which plant where.’
Years ago, I did an exercise in a book (’The Path’ by Laurie Beth Jones, I think) to help you decide what ‘job’ fits you best.
Mine ‘four quadrants’ were: teaching, gardening, sharing and community. I know I can find a way to combine then all and make a buck in the process. ;)
Just about every tomato except Heatwave, my FRiend. There may be others now.
Be sure to read the labels carefully. If they don’t indicate a temperature, note the variety and go home and research it for yourself.
There is nothing quite so lousy as sitting there, like the Skipper on Gilligan Island (with a fork in one hand and a knife in the other, waiting for a beautiful tomato) and finding that tomato will refuse to ripen in your climate or conditions!
Love my customers, I just have to grin and shake my head. :)
One of my other favorites is—I want some of those bush pole beans. Oookkkaay.
I really have to go clean house and I’ve got to go get some groceries. Feb-May are my busiest months and everything else slides. Time to pay the piper. Sigh. First day I’ve had off in awhile that I wasn’t too tired to move, and I’ve got to play catch up.
I did get my big planters out by the steps and I brought home a bunch of perennials we were going to throw away. I’m going to try and get them planted down the driveway. :)
The White Cedar are going to be the backdrop for my ‘Evergreen Garden’ on one side of the yard; they’ll get about 30 feet tall up here; six months of winter slows them down, LOL!
I’m REALLY excited to plan that area. I just LOVE the textures and various shades of green and gold and blue-green combined. :)
Click on "account" at the top of the forum page. You will then see a list.
First thing is to click on "My Locale" - this will allow you to chose the State where you live.
The next thing is to click on "My Profile" - there will be some text that says "you can edit this page" click on the text and you will have a box you can type a message in just like answering a post on a thread.
That is just the basics. Adding pics and graphics are another thing.
“...how many plants are in a 4-pack?”
Priceless. LOL!
