For foreigners learning English, spelling is confusing. Light-lite, through-thru, there-their-they’re...as long as they don’t have to read, they can learn the language quite easily. So they say.

Too true. English spelling is an art form, not a science. It wasn’t “thought up” by anyone, of course, but developed organically through the natural processes of linguistic development.
It doesn’t make sense ... it just IS.

We should go back to Latin. It's the hodge-podge of other languages and dialects that has made the "living" English language such a mess.
Think about it. In Latin, Libertas inaestimabilis res est means "Liberty is a thing beyond all price". Nowadays, "hope" and "change" have taken on completely contrary meanings.

a man goes to buy a horse. The stable keeper instructs him that to make it go faster yell few! To make it go slow yell WHOA!
He tried it out, went out riding yelling few! few! few! the horse was running fast but then came upon a giant cliff. He forgot how to stop and started yelling NO! STOP! DONT! WHOA!!
He stopped just at the edge of the cliff and said phew! That was close...
