Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? Its an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training
Ive been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe thats why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood
That triggers a thought..... Canning jars are great ways to store anything even if you don't process the food.
Once you dehydrate your food to the proper moisture level, you can put the dehydrated food in canning jars and just screw on the usual canning jars lids. Although it isn't processed, those canning jar lids still have a great seal and will prevent any moisture from getting in.
Some canning jars are made to be can and freeze jars and are great for storing nuts, grains, and spices in the freezer without have to worry about freezer burn.
I've stored spices in my freezer in canning jars for literally years with very little apparent deterioration or loss of flavor.
Since the jars are basically hermetically sealed, they can keep out insects and other critters that can chew through plastic to get to the contents.
Thank you, Granny .. I’m afraid all the ‘survival’ type issues are going to be part of more and more threads.
Have a peaceful weekend ...... ;)

I’m here, Granny!
Proud of your thread.
Thanks to all posters for a great compilation of interesting everything. :-)
I’ve been using food grade hydrogen peroxide for over 20 years, medicinally, and as a mouthwash, foot bath, sore healer, keeping veggies fresh. There are multiple uses, and it’s not without its controversies, especially (as you can imagine) the FDA’s position for medicinal use, but I’m a believer.
It’s oxygen and water, and it’s an extremely potent chemical that must be diluted ... I use 10 oz. in a gallon of distilled water, which is recommended, and always keep a spray bottle at the kitchen and bathroom sinks. I keep the main bottle refrigerated.
It’s also used for faster, more effect seed sprouting, and in place of chlorine for pools and hottubs, among many other uses.
Here’s some info

Oh, I should also note that Karl Denninger Received The Reed Irvine Accuracy in Media Awards February 26, 2009
from Accuracy in Media which is a citizens’ media watchdog organization whose mission is to promote fairness, balance, and accuracy in news reporting. Founded in 1969, AIM is Americas first non-profit press watchdog group.
The Reed Irvine Accuracy in Media Award was established in 2005 to honor those who have made outstanding contributions in the tradition of Reed Irvine by independently covering and reporting on news that was misreported or ignored by the mainstream press.
I really didn’t expect it like this, either. I’ve seen the quote on FR many times, about how this country could only be brought down from within. I forget who it was, but it looks like he knew what he was talking about!!
I always thought it would be more of a Red Dawn scenario.
Do you mean like foraging off the land, or begging from door-to-door? LOL. I wonder if any of us could survive completely alone.
