Is it any good? I saw the original (no, not then, now) ... very preachy IMHO ...

Isn’t this one about global warming? The original is a classic. I don’t care about a remake.

That would be so cool if they followed the original short story instead of the first film. The film veered off from the movie early on.
In the short story, when Klaatu is shot . . .
spoiler . . . He dies. . . . No, really, I'm not making that up. spoiler
Now if Keanu did that, it might be worth watching.

I thought the original was pretty good but had an obvious tho indirect communist/nazi message. In other words if you Earthlings don't behave, we will kill you all for the good of society.
Intergalactic society that is.

A much better Sci Fi of that period was Fantastic Planet. I tried to order it from Netflix but they listed it as unknown availability.

Any movie with Jennifer Connelly is a good movie, IMO.

I have no idea how good the remake is. The original was a classic, but you really don’t want to know what it’s message was.

Isnt this one about global warming? I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised. Even so, the message in the original was pretty bad too.

I made the mistake of watching the extras that came with the DVD. The producer explained that the message was that we were supposed to stop being mean to the Soviet Union - that was then under Stalin - and surrender some of our sovereignty to the UN.

I think you probably mean Forbidden Planet. That one surely is available at Netflix. Fantastic Planet is a European animated sci-fi film from 1973, which Netflix may or may not have.

I listened to it once on tape in the car. It was part of a larger collection. Unfortunately, I had been tipped off to the story a couple of years before that, so I knew what was coming at the end (although I didn’t know about Klaatu.)

I saw the original half a dozen times. I thought it was superb. I’ll pass on this one.

I'm sure the new version will end with Blaming President Bush!
To: EveningStar
Yep! The original The Day the Earth Stood Still is classic sci-fi but its underlying theme is that we need some sort of world government powerful enough to slaughter us as the best way to bring about "world peace". However, it's one of those liberal-themed movies, such as The Grapes of Wrath, where I can overlook the premise because the film is so good. I own it on DVD, and enjoy watching it.
