(Vanity) Those of you that are from/reside in the Kansas City Area
Me

Posted on 06/16/2008 1:25:45 PM PDT by GOP_Raider

I'm going to be in Kansas City this weekend as a summer vacation. Since I've never been there, I would like to hear some of your recommendations on what to do--besides th e primary reason why I'll be in KC--if there are restaurants, places to see and/or avoid, dive bars, and so on. Any suggestions are always appreciated (even from Chiefs fans) :)

Thanks in advance.

The Plaza is a must see.

For food, consider Lidia’s (Italian), Arthur Bryants or Gates (BBQ).

For sites, the Science City at Union Station, Nelson Atkins museum and the KC Jazz museum. Royals baseball tickets are going to be cheap if not free ... might consider a game.

Do you have a boat?

Actually that's why I'll be in town. I'm a Giants fan and the Giants and the Royals are playing a three game weekend series this weekend. I was kind of amazed that I was able to get very good seats on short notice.

I do want to give Arthur Bryant's a try, but if there's somewhere else that's better that locals recommend, I'll give it a shot.

LOL, you think I can get by with an Evinrude trolling motor and build my own boat or will I need something more heavy duty?

The World War I Museum, The home of Harry Truman in Independence and of course the Plaza. Downtown has some interesting architecture. I prefer Overland Park when I go to Kan City to the Missouri side....

I was there for the 4th of July a few years back. It kinda sucks.

Yes, the Plaza is a nice place. I would also recommend visiting the Arabia steamship museum. It contains the complete contents of the steamship Arabia that went down ? years ago in the Missouri river.

There is one heck of a WWI museum near downtown. It is absolutely incredible!

Garazzo’s (Italian) and Gates BBQ are favorites of mine. For steaks, check out the Hereford House.

Finally, if you are into outdoors, I would recommend a trip to Cabelas at Legends. The Legends shopping area is a very nice place to walk around.

My two cents. MFO

The problem is serious for all those people. But I just could not resist.

If you like outdoors stuff, the Cabela’s store on the Kansas side is a real treat. (I-70 and I-435 near the Kansas Speedway)

For a different thrill, you can drive past (but don’t stop), what is locally known as “the Bendix plant”, in southern KC where nuclear weapons electronics are assembled.

Do try Arthur Bryants and if you really like good BBQ, try one of the several Gates BBQ outlets.

And yes, check out the fountains and the Plaza area. Consider a stop to Hallmark while you’re in town.

Buy the cheapest ticket you can get for the game and just scoot down to the infield line anywhere. Should be plenty of empty seats ... LOL!

Jack’s Stack (BBQ) (I don’t recommend Gates - rude. KC Masterpiece is the McDonalds of KC BBQ)
Oklahoma Joes, BBQ, get the “Z-Man”

Plaza III (steak)

McCormick & Schmick (seafood)
Bristol Seafood Grill

Westport for bars if you’re into that.

The KCP is a neat place (been there several times) but I do not think they have tours! :-)

Definitely the Hereford House. As my wife said, “I didn’t know you could make a sirloin taste that good.”

Arthur Bryant’s sucks. To me this “so called” BBQ tasted like a pot roast.

I like Oklahoma Joe’s, but my favorite BBQ in KC is the lamb ribs at Jack Stack’s. I don’t live there but have relatives there and I fly there a few times a year.

+1 on Nelson-Atkins Museum.

+1 on Jack Stack Barbeque (best beer selection of the BBQ joints, BTW).

+1 on Arabia Steamboat Museum.

Berbiglia Wines and Sprits, Lukas Liquor, or Gomer's for booze runs.

Kansas City Zoo isn't great, but it's getting better.

Thai Place Restaurant, if you like Thai food (make sure to ask it to be cooked "Thai hot" for the ultimate experience).

Since your going to be at the ball park, you will actually be closer to the new Bass Pro Shop. I have yet to visit but hear it is nice.

For steaks I also like the Golden Ox. It's located downtown in the old stockyards. The prime rib is too die for, but get there early so it's not over cooked.

Your obviously a baseball fan, so a visit to the Negro League Baseball Museum should be on your itinerary.

Hope you enjoy your visit to our part of the country. If possible, get out of the city and see how beautiful Missouri really is...just ignore all that extra water standing around.

Terry,

We ate at the original Gates restaurant location a few weeks ago and they were pretty good and the wait staff were very nice. The other night we had the ribs (cooked with cherry wood) at Avalon in Weston, MO. Awesome Restaurant! Great food!!

Weston, MO is a great little town to visit!!! Check it out

What ribs/location do you deem worthy?
