Final Cut Pro and the making of 'No Country for Old Men' Best Picture done on Macs

There has been a lot of talk in the last couple of years about Apple’s hardware triumphs, like the Intel Mac, the iPod and the iPhone. But there is more to Apple than just hardware — one of the unsung heros for Apple is its professional line of applications like Final Cut Pro.

The Coen brothers proved during the making of No Country for Old Men just how influential a Mac and the right software can be during the editing process. The movie won four Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In fact, it is the first movie edited with a completely digital workflow on Mac to win the Oscar.

“They [Apple] made it really easy for us — we cut now much the same way we cut on film [using Final Cut Pro]. It’s hugely faster,” said Ethan Coen.

The Coen brothers aren’t stopping there — they are currently editing Burn After Reading with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormand in Final Cut Pro 6.0.

So what, big deal. A computer is a computer. We have all kinds, all different brands. No big deal. We did have a computer in every room, till our kids moved out and each took one.

A computer is a computer.

The only people I see saying that are Windows users... never Mac users. Do you suppose there is a reason?

For the novice, Final Cut Express (the scaled down version) is a pretty neat tool. It’s worlds beyond iMovie and has power and options that can do a LOT. There is a learning curve, but if you get a manual and use it as a reference, it doesn’t take long to master the basics.

I made my first movie with Final Cut Express years ago when iMovie was not capable of doing much and had a lot of glitches.

Final Cut Pro must be an amazing tool in the hands of someone who knows how to maximize its options and power.

As a video producer, I used Final Cut Express as a way to make enough money to afford Final Cut Pro. It’s worked out beautifully.

The “making of” docu on “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” was pretty interesting in this context.

FCP doesn’t run on Windows - and there’s no equivalent software package until you get into serious multiples of the price.

And then the non-FCP software is notoriously difficult to use (AVID, I’m looking at you.)

Do you suppose there is a reason?

Because Apple is a cult?    =;^D

Or would that be iCult?

My two cents. I have done some interesting projects using pre-iLife08 versions of iMovie. I have not stepped up to FC Pro or FCE, yet. However I saw iMovie 8 recently at an Apple store. I now realize iMovie-pre 08 is a ‘tweener.

For pure consumers iMovie 8 is much easier. For people that worked in film it falls short.

So if you think iMovie8 is not granular enough, try to find an older version. FCE is a definite step up.

I wouldn’t say that about Windows in film work. But I would say that at this point, Linux is the more important OS in Hollywood, because most CGI work... including the number-intensive rendering process... is done almost exclusively with Linux desktops and Linux renderfarms. Macs thus far are just used for video editing.

Because we know it’s true and aren’t silly enough to worship our computers like a god.

It’s just a tool, or an entertainment platform depending on what you’re doing. Maybe a better tool but still just a tool.

However, you haven’t the experience on a Mac to really know if your belief is true or not. All computers are not created equal, Discostu.

The experience of reading the web, Checking e-mail and playing Battlefield 2142 on a Mac must be breathtaking.
I bet I don’t know what i’m missing.

Clearly you have never owned a Mac.

Actually I’ve used Macs. Back in the System 7 days, while I understand that has as much bearing on today as Win3.1 I still wasn’t horribly impressed.

All computers might not be created equal, but they’re still just computer, still just tools.

Do you notice any parallels between the Apple worshippers and the Obama worshippers?
They strike me as the same type people.

Well, that's a bit harsh. Here's why.
If there are people who worship their computer platform, they aren't harmful to anyone but themselves and their immediate family. it doesn't bother me. Macs are some fine ass-machines. Hell, I'll be switching to a Mac at some future point, myself.

However, those who worhsip BHO (and they do exist, I saw a woman on Cavuto's show on Fox who stated that Obama is sacred) are downright dangerous and risk putting all of us in the crosshairs...or worse.

This may be racist and the AM can yank this one if warranted, but I hope, come November, that there are more white voters than African American voters.

We have a Manchurian candidate seeking the highest office in the land and his sycophants bristle at the merest suggestion that his background and motivations be scurtinized. Dangerous.

But I'm waaay off topic so I'll leave it at that.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Forum Post.
