Greg Norman's £50m divorce deal leaves him free to marry Chris Evert Last updated at 11:00am on 8th September 2007
Greg Norman may be about to marry Chris Evert after reportedly agreeing a divorce settlement worth more than £50 million.
The 52-year old Australian golf legend, who is said to be worth £250 million, ended his 26-year marriage after months of legal wrangling over money.
Asked if he would now be marrying former tennis champion Miss Evert, Norman replied: "Sure, why not?"
The golfer known as the Great White Shark went public with his new relationship after being seen dining with Miss Evert in Sydney in December.
The 52-year-old American tennis star, who won 18 grand slam singles titles and is thought to be worth £15 million, had just divorced ex-Olympic ski champion Andy Mill after 18 years of marriage.
She was previously married to British tennis star John Lloyd. Mr Mill and Miss Evert, who have three sons, had been close to the Normans.
American Mr Mill, 53, who considered Norman his "best friend", was heartbroken by his betrayal, saying: "A year and a half ago I'd have taken a bullet for this guy. I didn't realise he was going to pull the trigger."
Leaving the court in Stuart, Florida, a smiling Norman said he was "happy to move on" but expressed regret "that the situation turned out the way it did", referring to the increasingly acrimonious proceedings.
Before flying off to be with Miss Evert at the U.S. Tennis Open in New York, he added: "We wanted to keep it as amicable as possible. It's kind of sad. It hurts a lot of people."
His wife Laura, with whom he has two grown-up children, cut a lonely figure as she left the court in tears.
The divorce is likely to be signed off in days but the former air hostess is still demanding another £500,000 because of delays in signing the confidential agreement.
She is expected to get the proceeds-from the sale of the couple's £5 million mansion on Jupiter Island, Florida, as well as a cash payment.
Norman, who was the world's top golfer for 331 weeks between 1986 and 1998 and won two Open Championships, filed for divorce last year over "irreconcilable differences".
In court, he said he had been more than generous to his wife.
A statement filed by his lawyers said: "The wife did not teach the husband to swing a golf club.
"The wife did not teach the husband to win."
Maybe she should have. He had trouble learning from anybody else.
Being £50m richer, I doubt she'll be lonely for long.
That’s what lots of son for you.
If she were a nice person I would find a way say nice things about her.
Wow, that is harsh. At least she was a hetero. Most of the women tennis stars of her era were flaming dykes.
Greg has been hitting the sauce for many years, which accounts for his appearance.
Judging from her adulterous behavior - with a horrible impact on two families -— she deserves “harsh”.
Bwahahaha, that was funny, spontaneously funny!
Jim Rome is the DEVIL!
I thought she was already divorced when she began dating Norman. AT least that is what the article implied, ie. she had just divorced Mills.
The article also doesn’t address the GROUNDS for Chris’s divorce from Mill or why Mill considered Norman’s behavior a “betrayal”.
One could draw the conclusion that Chris’s divorce, involving a large payment to Mill, indicated no fault by Mill..
To believe the “love affair” commenced AFTER the twin divorces is naive - at best.
The KEY word I drew from Mill’s statement, was “who considered Norman his “best friend”, was heartbroken by his betrayal” - was BETRAYAL.
I wouldn’t consider having my ex-wife marry my best friend - after a divorce ABSENT of adultery - a BETRAYAL.
“sometimes I feel like I am the last of the married for life people around....”
My parents were married in 1943 and remained so until my father’s death. My oldest sister was married in 1974 and is still with her husband, my other sister married in 1989 and is still married. So, there are others who are still together!
Wasn’t that Nick Faldo?
I actually know nothing of Chrissie's life, choices, etc....I just remember her when she as at her prime...the last I probably saw a picture of her was when she became 'Chris Evert Lloyd'.
I just thought she looked good...couldn't comment on her actual 'inner beauty' (or lack thereof...snort).
yeah....I know nothing about her...but I'm gathering she lacks a bit (or a lot) of true character.
.
Wow. Shallow and classless is no way to go through life. I thought you actually had some sense Chrissy. Sad.
IT all happened when she got that famous tennis grip on his putter.
