Anthropologists identify professional rider at Burnt City
Mehr News Agency ^ | January 1, 2007 | unattributed

A team of Iranian and British anthropologists working on human remains discovered at the 5200-year-old Burnt City have identified a male rider who they believe was a messenger in ancient times... “The marks indicate that he had gathered his right leg while riding. Thus the riding was carried out on a big animal like a camel or ox,” Foruzanfar explained. There is evidence that draft animals were used in the Burnt City in ancient times, but gathering a leg while riding is something someone does while riding a camel over long distances. Thus, it is surmised that the man was a courier who traveled regularly. Pathological studies on the skeletons discovered at the Burnt City cemetery are paving the way for the identification of the professions practiced in ancient times in the city, which was inhabited for about 1200 years.

The temptation was to save this second story for a topic next week, but I just couldn't wait, and figured it was cruel to make you do so. :') "Burnt City Inhabitants Used Teeth for Basket Weaving":

It is believed by some that the biblical story of Abraham being stopped by the angel of the Lord from sacrificing his son Isaac symbolizes the ending of human sacrifice by the ancient Hebrews.

Camels were not even domesticated until the middle of the 3d millenium B.C. (for their milk and meat). It was not trained to carry burdens until much later, and not trained to carry riders until the inverted "v" saddle was invented in the 1st millenium B.C. There is no evidence of domesticated camels in the 6th millenium B.C.

The Burnt City flourished 5000 years ago (i.e., 3d m BC), not 5000 BC.

Still too early for the dromedary, which dates from the 1st millenium B.C.

That is one estimate, and based on previously known information. This is new information which pushes back the date.
