"Freeper" anywhere in the title implies a connection where it is not wanted.

Wow. I've been off the web for a couple of days and was thrilled to see a 400 reply thread. Then I read it ...
When I started the team there was no official sanction from Jim. He didn't much seem to care either way. So it began.
The fact that this thread has not been pulled is a good indication of his feelings. Don't insult others, don't embarrass Free Republic and do good. There are all kinds of specialty threads that do not pertain to politics and they co-exist with FR just fine.
I happen to be an old timer on the board, lurking since sometime in 97 or 98. I believe that Free Republic is a worthy endeavor and support the aim of the website, even if I don't agree with all of the politics or the flame wars.
Does Jim truly understand the entire Stanford effort? Probably not. That's OK since he has a different perspective than we do of the project. His job is to maintain FR. That we have a place to meet on his board is good enough for me.
Folding@Home is a worthy effort and I do what I can to keep it rolling. I do not have the time or knowledge to duplicate what systematic, Malsua, papasmurf or Klutz has done. I try to start a new thread every week (usually Sundays) and fortunately systematic and Klutz have been able to start midweek threads.
Bottom line to me is that I want to keep the team under the Free Republic banner, unless Jim or John specifically request that we change. Yes, I would love to have a banner on the home page of FR. Not having the home page banner will not change my views one bit.
Folding@Home is worth my spare CPU cycles and Free Republic is worth my spare time. If we can provide free advertising for FR then that is great. If we tweak DU and Kos even better. I like being part of a project that is bigger than myself.

Didn't someone mention votes for each cpu?
To: Mo1
Mo1,
I never, ever thought that Free Republic was promoting this. No one ever promoted Folding in this way. It was always understood by me that this was an activity for those of us who were interested in doing so. Folding proteins isn't a liberal endeavor. It's a humane endeavor. My sister died at age 38 of breast cancer. If I can help see that even one other person doesn't die that way, then I'll do what it takes. If Jim Robinson doesn't want the name of Free Republic to be used, that can be easily remedied. [I can see why he would want to guard the use of the name Free Republic-- I just didn't think about that until now.]

Well, you should FReepmail him then rather than do it in the open forum.
If you skipped over some of the thread you should read from about 200 - 250. He was pretty explicit that he wanted none of this.
To: Petronski
Wether a connection is wanted or not is irrelevant. We are freepers and we are Folding@Home, and therefore the term freeper is accurate and representitive of our team.
The problem only exists, and is only relevant if we use the term FreeRepublic.
To: ican'tbelieveit
I think it was votes per point :)

My SIL at 36, leaving behind 3 kids, 15,11, & 10. I have degenerative disc disease, and suffer from chronic pain, something I hope no one ever has to deal with, but many do.

How about a disclaimer - "Freeper Folders. Not sanctioned or endorsed by FreeRepublic.com."
To: Senator Bedfellow
Ooh, even better. I should be over 4400 at the next update.
To: BitDrifter
I think it is relevant because it is a question of respect, and also a question of credit. He doesn't want his website connected, so we ought to respect that. And if he doesn't want his website involved, why should it get credit?
When one sees the name "Freeper," either one knows what it means or one looks it up.

Ah, ulterior motives. I like it, assuming you're in favor of my suggestion, of course :)
To: Senator Bedfellow
I feel like a red headed stepchild. Not wanted. :-)

Smells like a non-associated association.
Mind you, I'm just giving my n00b opinion. I do not want to sound like I'm insistent about this (me and my measly 4 WUs). I'm just providing my thinking.

Eh, I'm sure it's nothing personal.
Anyway, if FR doesn't want to garner a bit of free (and positive) PR from us doing this, so be it. But like Petronski said above, why should it get any credit from the effort, in that case? This is our thing now, not a FR thing :)

I like "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy." We could even keep the bird.
Or this:
The Gipper wants YOU!
to join Team Ronald Reagan.

We should FOLD ON until we figure out how to rename the team.
Very disappointed in FR at this point.

You know, "Fold one for the Gipper," who died of one of the diseases the Folding program is trying to cure.
