That said, I'm happy to continue with this project whatever it's named. Just let us know what it will be called, and don't get all bent out of shape because it's not exactly FreeRepublic.com.

I agree completely and will stick with the team too.

Amazing the way threads can go while this "old" man catches up on his sleep. :-)

I'm not really surprised that JimRob has no interest in "sanctioning" the team. He established this web site for a specific purpose, that is his focus, and that's why I and many others are monthly contributers. He is under no more obligation to recognize this effort than he is to sponsor a softball team we want to organize.

I am a bit disappointed that so many disparage F@H because it's associated with Stanford or because they view distributed / grid computing as inherently dangerous. This is another exercise like SETI or RC5. However, since they seem quite steadfast in their opinions, I'll not try to change them.

I'm willing to keep folding... after all, it's a worthwhile scientific endeavor and you can tell from the stats that we have made a difference. As far as a team name, it would be prudent to change the name and logo so it doesn't directly associate with Free Republic. Something like "FR-Folders", "Freeping-Folders", or "Conservative-Folders" are all fine with me. I'm sure others can come up with some better ideas -- I'm not good at naming things.

There's nothing liberal about studying mutant proteins, and frankly, mutant proteins are one of the biggest & least-understood threats to our health and safety (Alzheimer's, Mad Cow)

I agree with you completely.

We do not do it to advocate Stanford. We do it to advocate Stanford's research goals. I like Newt Gingrich's ideas, but I'd never advocate him as a politician. See the difference?

I do. Sadly some people cannot see the difference.

As for the IP addresses... if you've ever visited Stanford's home page, you've given them your IP address.

The same is true for this site and every other site. Thats how the internet works.

Assuming you even know one iota about computing, there are things that require calculations in the equivilant to petahertz to accomplish. Nuclear weapons related simulations are done on quntum computers, but those are specially made by the government for that purpose. Us civvies are left with traditional semi-conductor base computers.

I suggest the team name be changed, but left under some type of "conservative banner", since we can't use FR. Whatever happens though, I'll keep folding. If you're currently thinking about dropping out because JR doesn't support it, fine, okay I understand.

Wow, I'm speechless, and even feel a lil queasy.

I can't beleive there are people who feel that a politcal ideology is more important than helping people, or doing a "good thing."

----
An Analogy:

Liberal Doctor to Ideological Ignoramus:
"Hey, I got a guy bleeding to death here, can I please borrow those bandages and tape you have there?"

Ideological Ignoramus:
"Hell no, your a friggin liberal and your not going to use my bandages to SAVE ANYONE! YOU STINKING LIBERAL! Go buy your own bandages to save him!"
----

I have to tell you I'm appalled and embarrased by some of the comments I have read here today.

I will continue to donate my unused CPU time to Folding@Home and hopfully as part of a team of Freepers wether or not it's "sanctioned."

Since we are now in the top 800, you can see individual user stats on the Overclocking site! That's pretty cool!

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=36120

I'm in the top 20 producers at the moment (Happy Babymoon, it's my business name). I expect to be bumped off there pretty quickly by some faster folders, though.

Look .. if you want Standford to use your computer .. that is your business

But a poster I've never seen around before comes on here and leads many to believe that Jim and FR are sponsoring this and I'm not allowed to question the legitimacy of this program??

My poor little slow computer just chugs along. Mine won't be breaking any records, but, it's contributing to the program. :-)

But those of us "folding" are doing it voluntarily. It doesn't harm you at all. It may even help you (or somebody you love) someday. :-)

If it was just my little 'puter, I wouldn't be on there either! But we have a small home network. So far 2 of our computers have generated points. The laptop will likely not finish until sometime in 2009. LOL
