"We" meaning those of us who have volunteered to help the project, I'm sure.

I can't believe people haven't heard of SETI@home. This is no different (except that it is better science). There's also Genome@home, from Stanford, and I think IBM has/had one too.

If you look at the first post of this thread and then the home url for this project - http://folding.stanford.edu/ - I think it may help answer many of your questions.

There a thousands of computers and thousands of teams doing this. Some may be at Stanford, but many, like us, joined a team out of a common bond.

Why should Freepers donate cpu usage to a pricy, liberal college? Probably because most Freepers aren't automatically prejudiced against the institutions of higher learning, like you seem to be. You're right smurf... this is starting to feel like the Spanish inquisition. I'm *outta here*... let me know where we come to roost. e-mail is tlbradley@gmail.com, if for some reason, I can't make it back here.

...and if I may add to that. We are very proud to be FReepers doing it.

It's NOT about Stanford, really, it's not. It's about helping. And if we can continue to make the kind of impact that we have been, and whip the DUmmies and at the same time rub thier noses in the fact that we are FReepers, then so much the better. Why not use your ENEMY to defeat your ENEMY?

I guess I could understand where they were coming from if this was a distributed computer project to study why male > female transexuals become lesbians, but it's not.

Yes! You found me out! Burn all colleges and universities to the ground.

So you're saying colleges and universities can do worthwhile research?

You're 100% right! They are, But, it's so much to irritate them and watch 'em wiggle and squirm. :)

We do not do it to advocate Stanford.

We do it to advocate Stanford's research goals.

I like Newt Gingrich's ideas, but I'd never advocate him as a politician. See the difference?

If you are trying to win some over to this "program" of yours ... you failed

First of all it is not *my* program. But if it was I'm pretty sure I would not want you on it. You seem to have a desire to purposely not understand what we're doing and what the program is for. But you *do* have a desire to be disruptive and belligerant.

If you have no desire to join us, then pack-up your 286 and trundle off to another thread.
