A black bear camped out under the porch of a home where four children live - and near where 20 kids wait for the school bus...
Residents...had suspected for several days that a bear was in their midst after they saw their trash cans tampered with.
But it wasn't until two children happened upon the bear on Sunday that its exact whereabouts became clear.
Pedro Sainvil owns the home where the 600- to 700-pound male bear seems to have settled in for hibernation.
On Sunday, Sainvil sent his two children, ages 8 and 9, outside to play in the snow.
"After 15 or 20 minutes, they came back screaming, 'Dad, Dad! There's a bear under the house!'"
"This is a situation that's not uncommon in the Northeast and especially the Poconos area," said Feaser.
"Obviously, the fact that this is across from a school bus stop heightens the concern."
...the bus stop will be moved to another part of the road until the bear is removed.
Feaser said people should bear-proof their homes by blocking crawl spaces and other small spaces that might entice bears during denning season. The space under the Sainvil's porch is open.
Sainvil was most concerned for his family: his wife, their two elementary school-age children and 5-month-old twins, as well as his mother, who has not left the house since Monday.
"It's very scary," said Rose Marie Louis-Jacques, Sainvil's mother.
"I'm just praying that he'll take off. It's like a bomb under the house."

Or is that the right to arm bears??
In this case it's the "right to warm bears".
You're absolutely right. Several summers ago, my daughter was at her school in Central Bucks. It was summer and they had no AC, so I knew the doors would be open. I heard on the news that a very large black bear had been seen up near the school and the sheriff was then searching for it. Scared me. We also saw a baby bear dead in the road years ago.
That must be something to see. Seriously though, you are right about Jersey. A loud group of people(unsure whether they are in the majority or not) in Hunterdon and Sussex Cos. don't like the threat of bears in their new neighborhoods but are oppose to any bear take. It's one or the other they can't have it both ways.
PETA will insist the family move out.
If the bear doesn't snore louder than I do, it wouldn't be a problem.
a black bear wandered into the pasture by pats parents place.
the cows must have been a bit much for the bear who sought
safety from the beasts in a tree.
Wetback bears??
No, why does the bear need to be destroyed? There are other ways. I am sure the bear doens't realize where he is. I know the family is frightened and we would be too. But, why can't the animal control people just tranquilize it? That's a humane thing to do is it not? That way no one is hurt.
Well, thanks for that intelligent repsone. I had no clue about that. Well, what do they do in the meantime? The family cannot be prisoners in their own home. There MUST be a place they can take him.
"I am sure the bear doens't realize where he is. I know the family is frightened and we would be too"...
It's obvious you are a cube guy.
You are wrong here. The bear knows exactly where he is at and has decided to set up shop. It's his turf now, and he'll fight you for it.
Darting and moving bear is one of the least successful enterprises. The bears simply come back. From 3 or 4 HUNDRED miles away.
If he gets relocated to an area with no other male, (if he really is 6 or 7 hundred pounds, he's biggun) he MIGHT stay put. But once bear get used to dumpster diving, they turn recidivist over night.
Might have to shoot him.
....eminent domain....calling Goldilocks....
No, I am not a cube guy nor a guy period. Just trying to understand how they can take care of this dangerous situation without killing the bear. Obviously the family cannot remain in the house with the bear living there. As for the bear not knowing where he is I meant by that that he doesn't know this is Mr. and Mrs. so and so's h ouse. He just found a place to hibernate and has no idea he's in suburbia. I hope they can relocate the family for a few days until they can settle this.

There has to be a balance in nature. The problem now is that there are too many bears.
Where should they be moved? Do you want bears dumped in your yard?
The forests are too full of big, older, mature, male bears...which is one of the reasons why the teenager bears leave the forest for the towns.
The eight foot tall, 900 pound bears drive out the six foot tall, 500 pound bears. Putting back a 500 pound bear into a forest full of 900 pound bears will last ten minutes.
Some say...dump the bears in Central Park for those who pretend to want the bears.
"A couple of packs of firecrackers tossed under the porch and I bet old grumpy would have come roaring out."
That the ticket - piss the bear off. Duh!
Here in Rochester, MI, the children's bus stop was in front of a pedophile's house (he was registered and all) but the school board told parents who wanted the bus stop moved to take a hike!
