I never understood a "furlong," either, even though it, too, is a term that is used mostly in horse racing.

LOL! Thanks sionnsar, but I'm still not a professor yet. I'm just a lowly TA. ;-)

It is interesting the different approaches to horses - in Britain and Ireland, horse riding is regarded as 'posh', in America, particularly in your part of the States, it is mainly a working class pursuit - I guess those differences stem from the histories of those countries; in Britain and Ireland, the lords rode horses, the commoner rode donkeys, whereas in the States the working man rode a horse!!

It also means that they were motivated to study. Some students put a lot of the blame on the teacher, but a lot of it is their own motivation and work.

That's not surprising, after a week in the Orient!

Actually, in my neck of the woods, horse riding is mostly for those with money. They do a lot of show jumping and riding.

1 fpf = 0.00037202... mph.
1 mph = 2688 fpf.

The greatest gift a woman has to give a man is her virginity. Ya, there is something about such a woman, I think the trouble with people waiting is: (a)they may rush into a marriage and (b)they may die before they get the chance!!

Actually, where I come from, horses are, indeed, "spendy" items. People keep horses for cattle ranching (quarter horses -- an American breed) but they also have quarter horse races. We raise a lot of thorobreds for racing, and of course, the ever popular Arabians. Horse racing is often a livlihood for a lot of people.
We also have polo matches, though that sport is (for now) reserved for the "rich."

The Northern states appear to have the same approach as this side of the Atlantic, but further south, the horse appears to be a tool of the working man.

I think that was my point - your part of America regards a horse as a utility rather than a commodity.

It used to be a tool of the working man in the northern states, too. But after the invention of tractors and automobiles, they aren't necessary anymore.

"furlongs per fortnight"? a unit of velocity (1 fpf = 1/8 mile traveled in two weeks)
